Though smoke was more often used for deception than directly attacking it was more than capable of doing so. By infusing smoke with chakra, causing it to become more thick and viscous, one could cause smoke to turn into something to something solid. The surface tension held together by chakra would allow it to slam into objects with great force before it would dissipate.
Like many things revolving around smoke ninjitsu there was a certain level of fineese required to make it a viable offensive alternative. The first portion of Tachibana's training of such fineese involved training his ability to keep the smoke a round near-solid. By focusing chakra into smoke he could easily form it into a spherical shape, but keeping it that way necessitated a level of fine control he didn't normally have. Moreover, this was an ability that should have went tangential to attacking using his normal methods, meaning taijutsu. He needed to be able to do this while fighting, simultaneously.
The training was slow and methodical. He'd summon forth the sphere of gas to fly toward a target while fighting a dummy. Between the summoned location and the target he purposefully put many obstacles, some of which moved. This necessitated a certain tempo or attention to be taken to the frequency by which he summoned the balls and they flew. Dividing his attention in this way was difficult as every Taijutsu move in his arsenal was purposeful. Not properly paying attention to either thing would result in less than stellar results of missing a blow, or missing the target.
As time went on splitting his mind became a much simpler task. His brain had become able to cope with thinking about two things at once quite easily. Normally, such a thing was difficult because the brain was programmed to problem solve on one thing at a time, but the constant necessity to think about two things allowed him to achieve this at a relatively normal functional capacity. The controlling of the spheres became almost muscle memory. Slowly he increased the number of sphere he would allow to appear at a time until he reached his functional maxima. In the end, he found himself only able to control forty-eight at a time, though felt as if in the future it would be possible to control more. There was an invisible blockade in his mind that was likely a limitation set by whoever had founded the technique in order to not allow one to harm themselves. Accepting the limit he moved on.
