Glersee (Trail Markers) Rank: "E" Skill: Skill Effect: A special language, enables a user to interpret and communicate by using trail markings. Special: --- Drawback: --- Description: Picture; Picture Glersee is a unique form of communication developed by rangers and scouts, combining symbols and the use of stones, sticks, etc. to mark trails. They are able to pass vital information to comrades without letting the enemy know what's being said. Those conversant in Glersee can interpret the signs left by others before them, and they can leave signs for others. In addition to these symbols, stones, sticks, and other natural material are used. For instance, two stones placed on top of one another means that a steep mountain or cliff is straight ahead. Two stones placed side by side means the trail is relatively unobstructed. Sticks placed in the form of a cross means that the road branches off ahead and is safe. Two sticks placed in the form of an x means that enemy troops are up ahead and that it is dangerous. A pile of stones with a stick on top means that a cave is nearby, but that there is danger in the cave. Each time learned user gets 5 die roll to increase the skill. Limit: ---

As a ranger, Yoko found the idea of a semi-secretive language being built into nature as a rather interesting concept. Gelersee typically revolved around nature after all, although it could be used to mark households as well. Yoko was studying the language in the local library diligently increasing her knowledge on the subject matter. She was impressed to learn that such a complex set of meanings could be encoded into such a mundane looking piece of scenery.
The more she read about this skill the more imperative she believed its understanding to be, for not only did it allow her to heed the warnings of people who had passed through a region before her, such as a dangerous path ahead. But it also allowed her to intercept messages that she would have otherwise been unaware of.

The youth continued to study the inner workings of the language so that she could better apply it in her future assignments. If she was to act as a scout under radio silence, then perhaps this language was a means by which she could communicate with her team. The language, after all, featured signed for enemies ahead, or watch out for the hazardous terrain. If Yoko could incorporate parts of this language into her already impressive arsenal, then it would undoubtedly enhance her bushcraft.
Indeed, if she was to be deployed with a unit then this simple language offered a simple universal manner in which one could communicate with others regardless of base language. This was of great importance to Yoko when she was behind enemy lines working with resistance forces.

If Yoko was to lead a resistance group, then she would need to be able to communicate the environmental terrain with them. This language was well suited as it made no real noise, and to the uninitiated was unreadable. If an unskilled onlooker saw two stones together they would not necessarily know it was a hidden code and were even less likely to know its meaning. This gave the resistance an innate advantage over those who failed to adopt this language.
Yoko was also aware that this language could be used against opponents. Phycological warfare at its most basic level is she was aware that an opponent could read the language then leaving false warnings could help to slow them and erode their moral. Leaving a warning for minefield was an example that sprang to mind.

In doing so the youth could also help to break down communications within the groups and sow the seed of discontent. Coupled with a few selective marksmen shots to eliminate subordinates, and well a riot could break out. All by using a language as a weapon. Yoko was very keen to see an application of this in the real world. So, continued to study the subject matter diligently.
Throughout the day, when she finally came to pack up she felt that she had a rather comprehensive knowledge of the language and was prepared to use it on the battlefield or in the jungle if the need should arise. In fact, she would even be looking out for the coded messages on her next walk through the village park.

It had never really occurred to Yoko before, or at least not in much depth or meaningful stroke of ideas, but we are quite literally shaped by our environment right down to our speech pattern. This was of course the study of Dialect Recognition, the youth had never undertaken this field of study before but after some careful thought was soon to see real world applications. We all had innate preferences and stylistic choices that we made at a subconscious level.
This skill was the study of those quirks and their applications. The stated example was a member of a religion using heavy overtones when talking about God, but so many more sprang to mind for Yoko. A prime example to her mind was the small clicks that formed around particular styles, Marksman had their own jargon that whilst still of the common tongue was rather difficult to understand.

The use of certain words and their format could also indicate where someone was from, one could even theorise that someone using more five dollar words was of a higher education. Although she was quick to find this was not always the case, still the point remained that those with a greater vocabulary were in general of a higher educational standard or at least intellect. The example she thought of was eleemosynary, she had never heard a farmer use the word before.
Although this did not mean much in and of itself the youth was assured by an instructor that the continued study and discovery of these quirks could help to build up a solid picture of someone. For example, even as an unskilled practitioner, the youth was able to identify the sound of those from her village.

She was even able to gauge if someone was from a comparable social standing. Soon therefore after the youth learned to identify those from her own country as a whole rather than just the specific region and or village that she originated from. It was rather impressive being able to pick up on these rather small social cues, even the way people pronounced the same words was different. Furthermore, the structure of their sentences differed.
So, while one might be speaking perfectly, without an accent even, the structure of a sentence could foil an act. This made for quite the powerful anti-spy skill, as it was often these small cultural differences that gave someone away, Yoko could think of countless examples once she engaged in deep and meaningful thought on the subject matter. Even the way that they ordered drinks in the village differed from the countryside.

Yoko was sat in her house, with one of her “friends” she used the word friend to describe them because she had grown up alongside them, but this was basically all that they shared in common, no similar interests or anything of that nature unless of course one considered alcohol. Yoko liked a drink, but just once in a blue moon, and when she did drink she liked a whisky or an ice cold premium lager.
Her companion, on the other hand, drunk anything at hand, like he was now, slurping at a pint and shouting loudly. A drunkard, unable to control his voice. This would make for approximately the seven-hundredth time that she had told him to lower his voice. And at this stage she was starting to get rather worked up, telling him to be quite simply made him lower his voice down to a room level only for it to spur back up moments later.

The whole ordeal was starting to wear rather thin with the youth, her keen senses unable to block out his incessant shouting and screaming. Lord only knows what the neighbours must have thought. The youth watched him slurping and messaging people in a drink filled rage. Now one might ask why he was at her residence if she had nothing in common with her and he was only aggravating her. Well, he was her friend, and it seemed rather odd of leaving a friend when they were in need.
That being said her head was still bouncing, she stood up and drunk a mouthful of her lager, before heading into the kitchen to check on their food. She was cooking a curry, Rogan Josh to be exact, quite the sensory overload. The spiced Bird's eye chilis clung to her nose, irritating it but still it granted her some distance from the events in the living room. She lifted the lid and took a large sniff, before adding a tin full of diced tomatoes.

Thick cut tomatoes, her senses told her as much even when the can was but half open. With her acute sense of vision, observed the rugged cut, tomato tang mixed with the jar of curry, and soon began to bubble over the diced chicken. Next came a can of coconut milk, a thick white creamy substance it would help to bulk the curry up and thus save costs per portion. The youth stirred the mixture together before checking on her rice cooker and re-entering the living room.
Her friend was busy sending messages, as he had been for the last thirty minutes, unfortunately, he saw her re-entering the room and decided to start throwing orders at her. “Here come here and do this” his loud voice incapable of being lowered to a room temperature, keen eyes soon spotted the contents of his messages: violent abuse. He was telling an associate to go and purchase more drinks for him, else he would stab him to death, a rather violent turn of phrase to say the least.

(Post #4) Yoko knew all too well that any attempt she made to make the male calm down would count for nought, he would acknowledge her but it always went in one ear and out the other. Instead, she sat back in her chair sipping at the drink once again, she swirled the larger around her mouth so that she could appreciate the rich taste. She was pondering what her next move should be, clearly, this drunkard was not going anywhere, or at least had no intention of doing so.
So, the youth was forced to endure, sitting aimlessly watching a television show through drunken eyes. However, whilst her companion grew weary, her senses grew stronger the alcohol had a rather unique reaction with her blood or so it seemed. With every sip, she grew stronger in terms of observational skill, strength, and force of will.

She had never devoted much in the way of research into why her senses reacted in this manner but still knew that she really was improving her vision. She keenly observed the male as he finished off what must have been his ninth or tenth pint. The difference in skill was barely noticeable when she had been just tipsy, movement slowed slightly and cognitive abilities were marginally impaired but nothing or real merit.
She noted that her his senses had become ever so slightly dulled in much the same way that knowledge had diminished, her vision, however, had grown ever stronger. Contrary to what normally occurred: her vision and hearing had instead sharpened by a further five observational points. Upon having a further drink the youth had induced a state of merriness, or at least as merry as a pissed off ninja could be.

With the merry status, the youth was quick to observe her companions state, he has reached this state around the same time as her, as he possessed double her threshold. It took but five units to get Yoko tipsy, but ten for him. Thus, when you doubled this it took ten units for Yoko, so if they drunk an equal amount, Yoko would have been rendered Merry to his tipsy. Upon entering such a stage Yoko found her inhibitions lowered, but not by much.
Meanwhile, the other effects manifested themselves in her friend, she could tell through keen observation that his sense of balance was being distorted. And his voice, well it didn’t take a genius to realise that his voice had increased in volume. The youth thought about it for a moment before observing her own hands and saw that her usual steady hands were shaking, all be it slightly.

In fact, while the youths visual grew stronger her ability to use a weapon seemed to weaken, almost paradoxically. The youth walked outside to take a breath and sought to it that she should fire off a round of arrows to test the effect of this booze on her aim. The youth’s keen eyes scanned the areas for civilians she did not want to hit anyone in the by a stray arrow. In addition to this, the youth used her keen sense of smell to check for scents in the area and found it to be lacking.
Having identified nobody in the vicinity, outside of her friend who had remained in the house. She prepared to fire off an arrow, in doing so she measured the distance with her eyes. She had become quite a dab hand at this task, conceptualising the distance in terms of things she knew. In doing so the task of range approximation became rather trivial. The youth fired off and missed her target, it seemed her range was decreasing.

Keen observational skills kicked in as the youth began to recalculate the range that she was capable of firing the arrow at, each time she reached a new approximation she fired off an additional arrow. In doing so she was able to establish that she was able to shoot at three-quarters her rather increment when ‘merry’, which decreased by a quarter by every further five units. It, therefore, stood to reason that if she was plastered she would be unable to fire her weapon.
Yoko had never really been totally plastered but couldn’t help but wonder whether or not her senses would continual to hone in, perhaps she would be left in a state where she was unable to move yet had godly levels of observation? The youth made her way over and collected the arrows having established her ranges. Looking around the area to see whether or not anyone had been observing her behaviour before re-entering the property to eat some curry.

This technique was the culmination of several elements, first amongst which was Yoko’s acute senses, she had spent a considerable amount of time honing them so that she could passively sense things in her vicinity. Hearing a twig cracking whilst not actively listening for such an event was an example of this. The second component was her intuition, having studied the placement of classical traps, the youth had a general idea of where they could be located.
And thus she could, in general, discover them before tripping them off, this was in keeping with her preferred method: avoidance but still allowed her the opportunity to disable them. The third factor was that of natural reaction speed, quick reflexes permitted her to evade the traps in most situations in which someone of a lesser calibre would have been hit. Again, this came from experience but this time, it was from her experience as a ninja, surviving in a cruel village.
When one roamed the Badlands as Yoko’s clan had done, it was only natural that you would start to pick up on more subtle details. If anything, she found this technique a natural progression to her constant state of alertness: she simply searched the area subconsciously now rather than needing to actively search specifically for traps. No doubt this could save a substantial amount of time, and help her in the future when faced with traps in dungeons, enemy strongholds, or generally being sneaky.
