Much of Taki no Kuni was covered in wide open grassland, broken here and there by elevated plateaus of sedimentary rocks that had built up over the millennium. Much of it had been impacted by human presence, by the towns that had sprung up or by the roads that connected them, but there were still areas largely devoid of civilization. There, the shinobi could still find the space they needed to train away from civilians, who might be impacted by the larger scale displays of prowess. That was how Oros found himself here, sitting alone on a boulder in a cross-legged position. Takigakure and Yukigakure were running a joint training session with the intent on building village relations and, to a lesser degree, give their shinobi real world experience against peers from outside their normal, everyday lives. The giant was expected to grow stronger while working with his assigned counterpart, but he knew he was also expected to pay attention and learn, in case they were not so friendly down the road.
Oros’ partner had not yet arrived at their allotted training zone, but that did not mean the giant had to wait to begin his growth. Oros was focusing on his mind to start, specifically its defense against unwanted intruders. He hated the idea of his psyche getting affected by genjustsu or by more mundane methods, so he needed to train himself to resist as best that he could. And it began with his breathing, which he tried to regulate in the calm of the solitude he found himself in. Deep, long breathes designed to still his mind, in and out in rhythm to his heartbeat. The mind could not be brute-forced or bullied into cooperation, and Oros had to remember that.
From there, the giant began to build a maze. Not literally, of course, but in his mind; it had been a recommendation to Oros made by a guest lecturer at the academy, in an attempt to assist the big man who was struggling to grasp the abstract concepts given in the lecture. He had told Oros that when someone attacked the mind, they sought to attack a certain part of it, hoping to frighten, unsettled, or outright damage their psyche. A shinobi with no defense was basically leaving a direct path to victory for their opponent; they needed to make them work harder. Forming a maze was a good mental exercise, because it allowed Oros to craft hypothetical dead ends to sort of “delay” the effects.
Of course, this kind of thinking was not how mind-affecting jutsu operated; the stronger mind would overpower the weaker one in an instant. It was simply an exercise that Oros could perform to strengthen his own mind. Today, Oros was aiming to add a few more dead ends. The giant fell into what could almost be described as a trance, as he left the rock he stood on and found himself standing in the entrance in the maze, in search of the gold at the end. He was both the attacker and the defender, the latter hastily constructing the maze to deter the former. Oros could feel progress being made, a few more walls in the way, but eventually the inevitable happened. His breathing heightened and the rhythm was off. He had lost focus, and in turn, lost the battle of his wills.
But still, he felt progress had been made.
