<sub>The boy's chakra flared as he tried frantically to pull more minerals together. His form was sloppy at best and in his frustration he had lost the calm and collected mind he needed to effectively perform the justu.

Earth hardened as wasted chakra pulsed through the conduit into the ground, minerals combining and transforming. The area affected was almost ten meters in diameter, but most of the area had been affected by side effects of the technique more than intended results. While the center around the boy had raised upward three feet and had become sturdy stone, after the three meter mark the earth had become weak limestone and beyond that fragile crystals had formed. While the spectacle was breathe taking, anyone who witnessed the event would be able to see the boy's shortcomings. Luckily no one had been around to make such observations.

A few minutes passed before Atsy collapsed upon his newly formed stone pedestal. His face smeared into the dusty stone as he struggled for heavy breathes. The boy's body felt exhausted, yet his only desire remained to train harder.

With that determination, Atsy forced himself to his knees to perform the justu again. He took deep breathes to calm himself before beginning but as his pulse calmed, the boy began to focus his chakra into the ground once again, pulling the remaining minerals to himself. He could feel the raw earth as it began to amass beneath him and the boy struggled to focus his chakra. Before long, the boy pulled the minerals together, crushing them against one another until the limestone became obsidian, cold, solid and firm. The range of the jutsu had reached five meters, but the boy knew that even with the distance par achieved, the stone could become more reliable if he simply put in more effort.</sub>

<sub>This was it. It was here and now that Atsy would put his entire body and soul into his task and accomplish the goal that had been eluding him for so long. It was riveting, the excitement building up in the boy until his mouth began to water. With precision and grace the boy would make his hand seals, building his chakra into his hands to release it into the ground.

As Atsy let the chakra build in his hands, the boy envisioned the area around him turning to dark unforgiving stone. The idea sent shivers down his spine, it would only get better from this point on. With dreams of success fluttering through his mind, Atsy placed his hands in the soft dirt at his feet.

The chakra seemed to explode out the boy's hands as soon as he placed them on the earth. On contact the boy could feel his chakra moving beneath the surface, searching for minerals to bring to his hands to be formed to stone. The boy's fingers tingled as he felt the chakra flow begin to pressure the earth beneath him together...

Then it happened. With one final burst of determination, Atsy made a fist with his right hand, punching into the soft soil. Only, instead of soil, the boy's fist met solid, unyielding resistance. Rock solid resistance. From the point where his fist had hit, Atsy watched as the ground around it rippled like a water, the ground the ripple touched turning to stone. Then about five meters away from the boy, the ripple dissipated, leaving the boy to crouch in the center of a five meter diameter circle of stone. Atsukiri smiled at his success before falling backwards to lay and rest on his accomplishment.</sub>

Suiton: Itomizu no Jutsu (String Water Technique)
Rank: "C"
Skill: Ninjutsu
Effect: Allows the user to create a more focused version of the Ochiru Ame Technique. Instead of grabbing large amounts of the water, the user is capable of picking up and holding up several small strings of water within the air
Special: "Hand seals"
Drawback: The more strings of water the user holds within the air, the more taxing and difficult it is to hold the strings within the air. If the amount of water strings created ever exceeds the amount the user is capable of holding, then all the water strings will fall and fail. When the user first learns this technique, they will be able to only hold up to twenty water strings. "C" rank training may be performed once the technique is learned to increase the number of strings the user may hold by five. After each successful training, the amount of points necessary to earn the next five strings increases by one. There is no limit to the amount of strings a user can learn to hold.
Description: Like the Ochiru Ame no Jutsu, this technique specializes in having the ability to grab a hold of water, move it around, shape it, and hold it within the air for long periods of time. The Ochiru Ame technique, however, is only capable of grabbing large amounts of at once. More finesse and concentration is required to be able to hold up several small strands at once, let alone allow them to move about as the user finds necessary. In order to grab a water string, the user forms wide arcs with their arms, their palms extended, sending enough chakra into the water to lift out one individual string of chakra-laced water. Once the arc is completed with the hand, the string of water will levitate in the air about three feet from the original surface of the water. In order to be moved, the user must again make arcs with their hands, moving the chakra within the water to the location that the user wants it.

Atsy sat with is mother to discuss his training. Now that the village was no longer under attack, the boy wanted to become stronger. He had been useless in the defense of the village and the idea that he was helpless irritated the boy. All of his training had been useless, the stronger chunin had used justsu that were far out of the boy’s own capacity at the moment.

“Atsukiri. What we need to do is identify your strengths and weakness,” the mother said in a professional tone. “As of now, all of your training has been a little of everything, mass variety if you will, to see what you are best suited in. Now you need to decide what type of shinobi you want to become.”

The boy withdrew into his mind as he contemplated his mother’s words. It was true that his training thus far had been unfocused in a specialization. Atsy wondered why it was so important that he specialize in anything. Would it not be better to know everything and have no weaknesses?

“I see what you’re thinking son,” she said with a slight chuckle. “It is not possible for anyone to learn everything and excel. While you may be able to learn many jutsu, those who took the extra time to perfect their skills in the areas you only dabbled in will always beat you. Here is something for you to think of; what does a true shinobi do when they recognize their weaknesses?”

Atsy thought to himself again before replying. Then with a sigh and a slight hesitation, the boy gave his answer. “If a shinobi is aware of his weaknesses, he uses them to his advantage, turning his faults into a strength.”

“Correct. So just because you focus your training more does not mean that you will be helpless. On the contrary, the way you have been trying to learn everything at once is what made you helpless correct?”

The boy nodded solemnly. But what should he focus on, he wondered. Just what? Atsy was well aware that his talents lay in ninjutsu, but how was he supposed to focus his training beyond that? He was a Kirigakure shinobi which mean that he excelled at water jutsu, but there were hundreds of water jutsu that had different effects as well. Atsy gritted his teeth in frustration.
Erith, seeing her son’s frustration, looked towards the corner where her son’s turtle shell rested against the wall. With a smile, she gave her son a bit of direction.

“Suiton no Tate is one of your favorite jutsu now is it not Atsy?”
The boy again nodded to reaffirm his mother’s thoughts.
“Then why not learn more jutsu that control elements? You already know the Ochiru Ame technique. You could start with water since you’re familiar with it and then you could move onto other releases…”

Atsy’s eyes lit up as he absorbed his mother’s words. It was a delightful plan and one that was well within his reach. Now it was just about figuring out what jutsu to start with. Erith could not help but giggle as he handed her son the small notebook containing the instructions to Itomizu jutsu.

The mother stood outside with her son, the sun beating down on the pair as they began the session of instruction. As usual, it had rained recently and as such the ground was saturated with water. The perfect environment for water training.

The boy watched his mother closely as she began her jutsu. Her hands moved flawlessly into the well practiced seals as she began to build her chakra for the jutsu. Then the woman began. Slowly at first, she moved her arms in exaggerated arcs like waves, all the while Atsy mimicking her movements. It felt strange to the boy, Erith had told him it was like dancing, but the boy had never danced. Atsy had always moved with deliberate movements in an attempt to conserve as much energy as possible and yet this jutsu required him to move his body in a way that seemed to waste energy. Regardless, the boy continued his mirror.

As Erith’s arms continued their swaying, the water around her began to vibrate. At first the water vibrated to the point that it was barely noticeable, but as the woman continued her movements, the water began to rise and fall, coming off the ground little by little. The water rose until it was almost three feet off of the ground and there the strands of water formed, glistening in the sun as Erith’s arms continued their rhythm. Her son could only stare in awe as he witnessed his mother’s genius. There were hundreds of strings, all moving perfectly in harmony, none of them impeding on another.

The woman paid no heed to her son’s look of awe. While he was still practicing the movements to raise the water, she had decided to show her son what the jutsu could really be used for. Without giving any signal of her coming actions, the woman placed her weight on her right foot before pivoting into a spiral. Her arms ceased their fluid waving motion, chakra flowing through the strings freely from her hands…

Atsy wondered what his mother was up to before he had the sense to jump up onto the roof of the house as she began her rotation. The strings seemed to lose their enchanting beauty as he watched his mother, instead becoming a symbol of power in the boy’s mind. He watched as his mother began to slice through trees by hitting them repeatedly with the hundreds of strings in a fraction of a second. It was awe inspiring. It was only after several trees had been felled a few moments later that Erith ceased her actions and the water strings splashed back to the ground.

“That son, is the Itomizu Zetsumei Jiten. It is the end goal of this training and will be the stone that you will start on as you advance as a shinobi.”

With a nod the boy jumped from his location on the roof back to the ground. Now the training would begin for real. The boy could see his need for vast amounts of improvement and yet for one reason or another, he felt only determination burning in his soul. No matter how long it took, Atsy promised himself he would master the Itomizu Zetsumei Jiten.

He took a deep breathe as he tried to get his mind focused for the jutsu. Atsy knew that this training would take quite a bit of time, but regardless, he still wanted to make sure he did it right and as quickly as possible. Then releasing his breathe with a sigh, Atsy began his hand seals. There were six seals and each one allowed the boy to focus his chakra meticulously in his hands for the delicate jutsu. The sixth seal the boy held, allowing his chakra to fully manifest itself before he attempted the actual jutsu.

After a few moments, Atsy felt that he was ready. Slowly he began to wave his arms, up and down in a rhythm that resembled waves crashing against a shore. Up and down, left and right across his body, the boy’s arms entered a fluid dance attempting to pull the water to his will. The chakra in the boy’s hands pulled at the water around him, each swing and wave creating its own gravity to draw the water off the ground. Movement after movement the boy continued and as he moved the water began to rise up before falling back to the soil. When the boy’s arms moved upward, the water attempted to follow, fighting the Earth’s gravity to answer the young boy’s call. When the boy’s hands moved downward, the water fell back as if relaxing, preparing for its next attempt to free itself from gravity.

The boy continued this pattern and each movement of his arms and hands pulled the water further off the ground. It took him two hours of constant movement before he managed to create his first handful of seven strings. When the boy waved his exhausted arms upward, the strings began to move with them, wiggling up and down as they did. There were only seven strings and Atsy believed he was capable of creating more, the boy conceded to the fact that his shoulders and arms were exhausted and would not hold out for another bout of several hours. Instead, the boy decided to practice manipulation of the few strings he had managed to create.

The boy continued his manipulation exercise, swinging his arms to and fro, the water strings following obediently as they elegantly drifted through the air. Though there were few strings, Atsy could still feel the chakra draining from him to maintain the jutsu. While just the few he had created did not drain a significant amount of chakra, the boy wondered how much chakra might be drained from the hundreds that his mother had created.

After taking a short break, Atsy sat back up from the water soaked ground he had laid in for his nap. Slowly he got to his feet, once again mentally preparing himself for his training. Manipulating the strings had proven to be incredibly easy compared to creating them and as such the training from here on would be about creating more strings in less time. It was unlikely that the boy would have hours to create a few water strings and the mere thought of an enemy waiting that long for the boy to create a jutsu made him laugh light heartedly to himself.

During his break, Erith had given the boy some tips on the jutsu and it was now that Atsy began to reflect upon them. As the boy made his hand seals his mind wandered back the conversation.

“The jutsu is about being gentle and firm at the same time Atsy,” his mother said as she sat with her son’s head in her lap. “While your movements make it seem like you are coaxing the water to move for you, in reality you are telling it to move for you. The reason it took you so long to make the strings you did is because you were not asserting your jutsu on the element.”

The boy began his arm movements, breaking into the rhythmic movements of the jutsu. Immediately he felt the water trying to answer the call of his chakra, the water instantly rising from the ground into the air a few inches before falling back down. Then, after a few seconds, the first several of the strings began to form, moving with the boy’s arms as they swayed.

“I also noticed that you did not move your body while you performed the jutsu. It is important to move while you perform the Itomizu jutsu. The strings themselves have no offensive or defensive capabilities so it is important that you are able to move while maintaining the fluid movements required for the jutsu.”

He started with his right foot, taking a step forward while he continued to move his arms, all the while more strings responding to his chakra. The boy pictured his mother sparring with him as he moved. From his first step his mother unleashed a terrifying punch at his head, causing the boy to dodge by pivoting on his right foot while lowering his upper torso into a bow and stepping onto his left foot. Next he dodged a powerful kick by breaking into a spin much like the one his mother had broken into for the Itomizu Zetsumei Jiten. The difference was that instead of unleashing a powerful jutsu, the boy followed his clockwise rotation with a spinning kick of his own while the number of strings continued to grow, now counting at seventeen.

Next the boy imagined his mother catching his leg between her arm and side, attempting to grab him to hold him while she went to finish him with a kunai. In response, Atsy’s right leg came off of the ground into a kick aimed to put his heel in the woman’s face. It was there, suspended in the air, about to fall that the boy noticed that he had created twenty water strings, all moving with his body obediently and harmoniously.

Atsy let out a groan as he landed face first in the wet ground, the Itomizu jutsu falling apart as he did. While he had moved elegantly and had not failed to maintain the jutsu, the boy had forgotten to make sure all of his movements chained together properly. While in normal situations he would have caught himself with his hands and done a hand spring back to his feet, Atsy had forgotten that while maintaining the jutsu he would not be able to use his hands or arms in taijutsu. A quietly laughter came from the doorway of the house that caused the boy to smile at his own foolishness.

Suiton: Itomizu Suijinheki (String Water Water Wall)

Skill: Ninjutsu
Effect: The user uses the Itomizu no Jutsu to move strings of water around the body as necessary, generally in tight-knight, criss-cross patterns, to prevent damaging techniques and weapons from reaching the user. Once in place, the water wall will not fall until the user dispels it, due to the fact that it is created within the Itomizu technique. It is impossible to cover every place with this wall, due to the fact that it is made out of strings of water. However, it is possible to move the strings about rapidly to cause a much smaller chance of penetration . (For those who have seen the fillers, think of Hinata's version of the Kaiten, the Ryonkushou [or however it's spelled].)
Special: Hand seals
Drawback: It is impossible to make a wall that completely covers yourself. For that, you need Suijinheki. This technique is made to block several small attacks without having to use large amounts of chakra. It will be found very difficult to block more powerful techniques with this one.

“You did an excellent job yesterday,” Erith said, complimenting her son. “Now I think you’re ready to learn another jutsu to give you a break from just practicing making more strings.”

Atsy nodded, acknowledging and appreciating his mother’s consideration. He had just finished the Itomizu jutsu the day prior and had planned on practicing it some more, even though his mind was numb from the repetitiveness of the jutsu. Still, his mind told him that this new jutsu would be related in some way…

“The jutsu you will be learning is the Itomizu Suijinheki jutsu. This jutsu coupled with your Suiton no Tate jutsu will help you build your defense.”

“Itomizu Suijinheki… It uses strings doesn’t it,” the boy asked as much curious as he was dreadful.

“Yes. Itomizu Suijinheki uses the strings from Itomizu to create a wall of strings to block attacks.”

The boy stared blankly at his mother. While he was a smart boy to be sure, the concept of a few strings of water and chakra stopping attacks for him seemed far fetched.

Seeing the boy’s doubts, Erith picked up a piece of linen cloth that she had been using to clean her kunai. Holding the cloth in front of her son, she began her explanation.

“See the threads of this cloth?” The boy nodded. “Now think of Itomizu. The strings of water are like threads and while alone they seem frail and useless, when you put them together they become strong.” She handed the cloth to her son to hold up. “Now hold this in front of your face.”

Atsy held the cloth to his face nervously. He could not see through it to the other side, so he had no clue what his mother was up to either. Not until he felt something hit the cloth and bounce off. He looked at the floor where the incoming projectile had landed and saw that it was a pebble.

“Now if I had just given you one string that pebble would have hit you right?” Atsy nodded, realizing his mother’s intentions. “Since there are hundreds of strings woven together in that cloth, it can stop the rock. The same thing is true of Itomizu. The more strings that you control, the more you can weave together and you can better defend yourself.”

It all made sense to the boy now and with the understanding of the task, the boy’s ambition lit up. This was not going to be an easy jutsu to learn, that was for sure, but with hard work he was sure he could learn it. If his mother thought he could, then he would not disappoint.

“Now the first step is using your Itomizu to form the wall,” Erith explained as they stood outside in the evening air. The hose was running from the kitchen faucet into the yard, spilling water everywhere. It had not rained in a few days and while the ground was still moist, it had not had the water they needed for the training. “I want you to throw a kunai at me Atsy and I’ll show you how to make the wall. Make sure you pay close attention.” She added the last part with a smile.

The boy acknowledged his mother, smirking slightly as he thought about her last remark. He always paid close attention but the joke made him feel more relaxed. He stared at his mother for a few moments and the two locked eyes. Then without warning, Atsy reached to his belt and threw a kunai from his pouch.

His mother jumped backwards as soon as she saw the boy reach to his belt, her hands instantly moving into the hand seals for the jutsu. As the kunai flew the air, Atsy watched as his mother’s hands moved from the hand seals into the sweeping motions of Itomizu. Instantly a cluster of strings appeared to her and with a horizontal sweep of her right hand the strings formed parallel lines in front of her. She followed with a vertical sweep of her left hand, crossing the strings. They were tight together, only about a centimeter gap between the grid of strings. The kunai tip poked its way through one of the gaps, but there it stopped before simply falling to the ground.

Erith stopped moving her arms and crossed them, looking satisfied. Atsy watched, impressed, but even more astounded that the string wall was remaining suspended in the air without his mother controlling it. It was not large, the wall being no more than three feet in height and width, but it still puzzled the boy how it was remaining suspended.

“I see you’re confused,” the mother said with a chuckle. “The secret is that since by the time you are proficient enough to use the Suijinheki, you have already learned Itomizu and Ochiru Ame enough that something as small as this is held up without a second thought. Notice how the strings are not moving?” Atsy nodded. “That is why I do not have to move to control them. They will just stay as they are. Now,” she said ready to move on with the training, “use your fireball jutsu on me.”

The boy complied with his mother instructions, not daring to question her goals. He completed his hand seals in an instant and inhaled as he did them. Then he released the jutsu with all his might, not wanting to be scolded later for going to easy on his mother. While he did this, his mother instead of backing away as she had last time, dashed towards him.

The woman’s began to swing her arms left, right, up, down and diagonally in a furious blur of movement as she moved towards the fireball. It was feet away and there was not a doubt in the woman’s mind about her son’s ability. If she was hit by the jutsu she would be seriously injured. She smiled. As her arms continued their vicious flurry, the strings rose up, hundreds of them, just like when she had shown her son the Zetsumei Jiten. The wall they created looked like a giant piece of water mesh and as the fireball impacted it Erith’s arms began to move even faster.

Atsy continued to blow his fireball even as his hands began to get burnt. His mother was doing something on the other side, but while using his jutsu, Atsy could not see what it was. Not until the last instant when his fireball blew apart, flames shooting to the sides as Atsy watched a mesh wall of water push through where the center of the fire jutsu had been. Behind the wall his mother continued to dash forward, her arms moving at seemingly impossible speeds. As he stared, Erith burst through the bottom of her jutsu, the rest of the strings remaining a solid wall as she passed them. The boy stood stunned as she reached forward and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt. The woman was slightly singed in some spots, the tips of some of her hairs a bit crisp.

“Two things,” Erith said to her son, slightly out of breath. “Firstly, do not ever freeze up like that just because you are surprised at your enemies resourcefulness. Secondly, you doubted that the Suijinheki would be able to stop that didn’t you?” The boy nodded. “Well you are partly correct,” Erith said, her breathing returning to normal. “The Suijinheki jutsu can block the brunt of most attacks, but it will not entirely stop larger attacks like that fireball. Some of the flame still slipped through the cracks and singed me a little. But regardless, do you now understand how useful this will be to you?”

Atsy nodded to his mother, fully aware that he would use this jutsu to the best of his advantage. He could picture it in his head, the Suijinheki and his Suiton no Tate creating a seeming invincible wall of watery defense around him.

The boy began his Itomizu jutsu, waving his hands in the fluid way that he had practiced the entirety of the previous day. Within two waves of his hands he had his twenty strings floating in front of him. Then with another two waves of his hands, Atsy had the strings cross themselves to form the grid like wall of Suijinheki. Once this was completed, Atsy lowered his hands as his mother had instructed.

A kunai flew from the woman’s hand as soon as the boy lowered his arms, flying through the large hole the boy had left in the wall. The kunai passed through the walls weak point and flew straight for the boy’s head. Atsy, seeing the kunai at the last moment, tilted his head to the left, the kunai barely grazing some of his hair. He had made a mistake and it was clear that his mother would not be going easy on him to allow mistakes. Keeping that in mind, the boy made the sweeping movements with his arms again and fixed the gap that he had accidentally made.

Again another kunai flew from the woman towards the wall, but this time the blade was stopped by the wall. That was the kunai was stopped, but at a closer look, Atsy saw the explosive tag wrapped around it at the last moment. The tag sparked and as it did, Atsy threw his arms furiously into the movements necessary to tighten his wall. The strings crossed one another in every seemingly possible direction in the moment before the tag exploded. As the tag exploded, the wall caught most of the blast and metal shrapnel from the kunai. Only a few pieces made it through the gaps and the ones that did were intercepted by the blob of water that instantly came to Atsy’s protection.

“You’re doing good,” his mother encouraged. “I think you’re ready to step it up a bit now, don’t you?”

It was obviously a rhetorical question and Atsy did not even bother to answer. Whether or not he felt ready was irrelevant, his mother had already planned every part of this training for him and his dissent would do nothing but make the training’s difficulty increase.

“I want you to stay in this circle,” his mother said as she drew a circle around the boy five feet in diameter. “You may use your Suiton no Tate and the Suijinheki to defend yourself.” Then with the circle and instructions finished, the woman disappeared from sight.

Atsy wondered what his mother had in store for him. He had a feeling that it was going to be something ridiculous, obsurd and delightful. Her training normally was. The first kunai flew from the tree line to the boy’s right, but rather than waste his time using Suijinheki, Atsy simply let his water shield deflect the knife. Then another came from his left and again Atsy left it to his Suiton no Tate.

The third attack almost fooled the boy. A third kunai came at him from his front and again the boy allowed his water shield to intercept. As the shield moved to block the lone kunai, twenty other projectiles, kunai, shuriken and senbon mixed, flew at the boy from his rear, causing him to redirect his shield to his rear. The boy shifted his weight to his right side to avoid the decoy blade and as he did began to swing his arms in the necessary arcs to create Suijinheki that would block the incoming shuriken and kunai. The senbon on the other hand were small and narrow enough to slip past the wall but were easily stopped by the shield. Atsy smiled to himself… Too soon.

They came from below him, a seemingly endless number of kunai. It was obvious that Erith had put a trap inside of the circle when she made it and Atsy wondered why he hadn’t noticed it sooner. Regardless of its origin, Atsy had only one option and that was to jump up into the air. As he did, the boy began to pull the strings from his previous Suijinheki beneath him. Sweat dripped from the boy’s brow as he worked furiously to create a sufficient wall to stop the attack, not wanting to focus his water shield on the same threat in case his mother had other traps. Of course she did, and as he focused on the torrent of kunai coming from beneath the ground, the boy’s Suiton no Tate intercepted the five kunai that she threw at his blind side. Five kunai with explosive tags. The boy kicked at the falling kunai sending them back towards the wood line before they exploded all the while continuing to move his arms to maintain his Suijinheki.

Then, it stopped. The ground beneath the boy was littered with weapons, but as he descended, nothing attacked him. It worried the boy. While the attack had been intense, his mother was not one to be satisfied by trivial offenses like that. When he landed, the boy put his guard up for the next wave.

Almost simultaneously as the boy’s foot hit the ground the next attacks began. Senbon descended on the boy from every possible direction. They were made of water but the boy knew that they were just as dangerous as senbon made of steel. Thinking quickly on his feet, the boy dropped to his back and began to move his arms to create a Suijinheki to cover his front.

The boy’s arms worked furiously, moving string over string as quickly as possible in an attempt to make the small gaps between them as small as possible. The senbon were thin meaning that they would be able to slip through even the smallest gaps. The boy did not intend to let that happen.

Of course intentions and reality rarely agree with one another and as the boy tightened his defense it was inevitable that numerous senbon managed to make their way through his wall. They were immediately stopped by the boy’s water shield, but the fact that the boy was unable to make a wall sufficient enough to protect himself irritated him. He wanted to meet his mother’s standards but at the rate he was going…

A pair of hands grabbed the boy around the arms and torso as he moved to get back on his feet. His mother had attacked from below, using earth jutsu to catch him off guard. Sadly, it had worked and Atsy’s mind raced to find a solution to his delemnia. The woman had timed her attack almost perfectly, three windmill shuriken incoming on the boy while he could not move. They would be too big to stop with the water shield and the boy could not move his arms.

His hands. The boy began to wave his hands to manipulate the Suijinheki and though the strings moved fractionally slower than normal, they moved in position to stop the large weapons from hitting the boy. Not wasting time to gloat on such a small accomplishment, the boy struggled to free himself from his mother’s grip.

The boy coughed as he got to get to his feet while his mother stood above him, glaring at him with judgmental eyes. He had failed to escape her shinjuu zanshu jutsu and the training had ended as Erith’s multiple shadow clones had moved in to finish him. He had given it his all but under the circumstances, he had been bested.

“That was half hearted at best,” the mother commented coldly, disgruntled by her son’s poor performance. “I know that you can do better than that and I expected you meet those expectations.”

Atsy did not answer the woman as he contemplated his situation. She expected more from him even though she had made ridiculous stipulations to the training. The boy felt hot in the ears as he continued to brood on the scenario. His mother was scolding him for not being able to perform a seemingly impossible task…

A handful of five handless kunai flew at Erith from the boy’s hand. In that instant, the woman disappeared again. A soft giggle could be heard a distance away, though the boy could not pinpoint its location. It was no surprise to the boy when counter projectiles came at him from three hundred sixty degrees around him either. With a stance of annoyed calmness the boy moved his arms to manipulate his Suijinheki, rotating his body as he did to create a larger wall to protect his entire front. The gaps this time were miniscule, making the barrier look almost like a solid wall. Then to his rear the boy pulled out his windmill shuriken, opening it as he turned and spinning it to deflect the remaining projectiles.

Before the hostile weapons even made contact, Atsy moved his Suiton no Tate to block the secondary attack that was hidden behind them. As soon as the knives hit his barrier, Atsy moved his shield to block the fireball jutsu that was incoming from above him before he ducked beneath his Suijinheki to the other side. A windmill shuriken impacted the string barrier moments later, causing the boy to laugh at his own insight.

Now it was time for a counter offensive. Hand seals flashed as the boy created water clones to aid him. As soon as they formed, each clone began to move its arms in the familiar movement of the Itomizu. Seconds later, the boy had eighty strings in his command and he intended to use ever one of them to his advantage.

The four young boys stood back to back, all intercepting multiple attacks with their Suijinheki. Fireballs and kunai came relentlessly at the group, while the mother sent her own clones to attack the boy’s. Eight arms swung wildly as they moved the strings to block every possible attack they could, defending against the numerous projectiles and jutsu.

Atsy himself was becoming fatigued as his arms continued to move the Suijinheki into place to defend, all the while trying to figure out where his mother actually was. She had hidden herself well, so well in fact that the boy wondered if she was actually anywhere near or if she had wandered off somewhere else while her shadow clones did all the work.

As if she could read his mind, the boy looked over his shoulder as he felt a hostile presence land in the middle of his group.

“I’m right here loser.” his mother stated playfully.

The boy and his clones instantly all moved to kick her, the group all pivoting on their left foot and kicking with their right. The woman of course was well prepared for this and hopped up to land on the connected feet before grabbing two of the clones by the face and crushing their heads causing them to revert back to water with a loud splash.

A fireball erupted from the boy’s mouth as he launched it at his mother, hoping that he could take her out while she was preoccupied. The woman of course was not as preoccupied as she seemed and disappeared into the earth as the fireball flew over her head and at the remaining water clone. The clone, thinking fast moved its Suijinheki to defend itself from the fratricide, only to have several kunai lodged into its back. Atsy swore that the clone glared at his incompetence before it burst into water.

The boy’s Suijinheki continued to move and spread wildly as Atsy attempted to defend himself from his mother’s onslaught. He was moving now, much in the way he had practiced the day prior, shifting his weight from foot to foot as he moved in an awkward dance to find cover. A hand shot up from the ground as he retreated, grabbing his right ankle as he did this. The boy smiled as he moved his hands into the seals rapidly for his Earth creation jutsu before he slammed his right hand on the ground next to his mother’s wrist.

“Not bad,” he heard his mother’s voice call out as the hand that had been grabbing his ankle burst into smoke. “I’m impressed that you are maintaining the Suijinheki with one hand as well.”

Atsy’s face lit up in surprise as he heard his mother’s words. He had not consciously been performing the movements for the jutsu but sure enough his off hand had moved from the hand seals back to manipulating the Suijinheki to defend himself from the kunai that had been coming at him. This was good progress and the boy was glad for it.

The boy was also glad when he saw his mother walk non threateningly from the wood line. Perhaps the spar was over, or then maybe it was not, the boy did not know. Either way, he wanted it to be over, as exhaustion was finally setting in on his small body. His body felt heavy and now that the adrenaline was stopping the boy was having trouble keeping from collapsing.

“Oh little boy, don’t fall asleep just yet!” his mother teased appraising him as she walked up. “Even if our little spat is over, you still need to tell me what we’ve learned so far so that I can decide whether or not you need more practice.” She smiled slyly as the words left her mouth.

The boy was to tired to think of the proper words to explain what he had learned so he simply moved his arms in sluggish waves before he began to fall backwards onto the ground. In front of him formed a glistening Suijinheki, with gaps barely a millimeter in width. It was not large all together, but it was tight knit and with more strings the boy would definitely be able to recreate the fine work on a larger scale.

Erith leaned towards her son’s work, examining it like a jeweler while one of her clones caught the falling boy. He was barely conscious which was understandable since he had used much more chakra than the woman had intended him to at the beginning of the training.

“Make another one.” she demanded.

A hand waved at the boy’s side as he manipulated the jutsu again to appease his mother though the woman had suspicions that the boy was not entirely conscious that he was doing it. Still, conscious or not the Suijinheki the boy made was just as flawless as the last, even if the strings had moved into place somewhat slower. All in all though, the woman was satisfied though she still wondered to herself if she should have him practice more when the boy woke up.

Water flowed through Atsy's hands as he crouched on the edge of the river, contemplating what his next training should be. It was a calming feeling; Atsy's nerves had been agitated of late. Suijinheki training had pushed his limits and while he and his mother had agreed that he needed to continue training, Atsy had agreed not to push himself too hard for awhile.

It made sense to the boy that he should practice a starter jutsu, but while it was the best coarse of action, the boy had no clue what kind of jutsu to practice. That was the reason he had been thinking by the river and it was the reason he was still there three hours later. The boy felt lost in thought as he worked through the puzzles in his mind, but as he stared into the water, he noticed something as it floated by.

Snapping back to himself, Atsy looked closer at the object that had just moved past his vision. He was not sure what it was, but he had a strange desire to find out. It took only a moment for the boy to find the object; it was washed up on a rock when he did. The boy inspected the item curiously and as he did, the boy knew what kind of jutsu he wanted to learn.

The item now sitting in the boy's hand was a whip. An old worn, water soaked whip. Atsy cracked his new found toy a few times, practicing the movements required to get it to crack in a loud, painful manner. Some time passed as the boy practiced the skill until a few hours later the boy was proficient to the point he felt he was ready to move on.

While a leather whip was nice for some people, Atsy knew that it was not for him. He discarded the whip back into the water and let it float back down the river in hopes it would inspire someone else. Then the boy's mind moved back to his water training.
