A few hours had passed after Hirokazu healed the wounds of his recent patient. The remainder of his training day involved further observations of the nurse he was assigned to. By the end of the day a feeling of accomplishment overtook Hirokazu as he felt successful in the knowledge he gained. As he walked towards the staff room, the medic-in-training planned the remainder of his week. He was offered a few days to spend studying and tending to personal matters before his training would pick up a bit. 

After grabbing his medical pack, Hirokazu walked towards to the clinic lobby and waved at the receptionists before exiting the building.

With the start of a new week, Hirokazu returned to the Crisis Control Clinic feeling refreshed and determined. The young ninja had learned a lot over the past month with no signs of it slowing down. As he passed through the front doors, Hirokazu greeted his colleagues and made way to his assignment for the day. Rather than being paired with a medical professional on the patient ward, Hirokazu was assigned to a procedure room. Why would they assign me here, he pondered. Once the medic-in-training reached the procedure room, he was surprised to find three pigs lying in the center of the room. "Welcome, Hirokazu. Come join the group", said Sensei Tokido. Hirokazu smiled at the five individuals who were also present. "As I was explaining to them, all of you are currently in training to become medical professionals. Whether your goals are to become medical ninja out in the world, or medical personnel at a hospital."

Hirokazu surveyed the room and found that the students were in pairs surrounding one of the training subjects. A woman with long blonde hair and red glasses sat alone at the final pig. As Hirokazu took a seat across from her, he extended his hand as a greeting. The woman gladly reciprocated and they both turned back to the sensei. "Today I want you all to focus on improving your healing hands technique. Each pig has been manipulated using the Siren's Kiss technique. I will now inflict the wound that each of you will heal." Sensei Tokido approached each pig separately and inflicted two light wounds onto each pig by utilizing a scalpel. 

Very interesting, Hirokazu thought to himself as he hovered his hands above the wound. Chakra began to emanate from both hands as he began to channel medical energy into the wound. Hirokazu was skilled enough to maintain chakra levels required to heal minor wounds, but he had yet to pass the threshold to heal more lethal wounds. As the healing energy continued to flow into the wound, he was almost able to envision it as a limit to how much chakra he was able to channel into healing energy. Hirokazu began to focus on pushing the boundaries by increasing the amount of chakra.

Minutes had passed and the bleeding began to decrease. "Not fast enough. You're still only performing a minor healing. You could heal someone with that, but it's much more time consuming", his sensei stated. Hirokazu nodded and continued to heal the wound until it had completely closed, leaving nothing but the stain of blood on the pig's skin. After noticing, Tokido inflicted a second wound in the same area. Hirokazu returned his focus to his chakra control and began to infuse the newly formed wound with healing energy.

A similar amount of time had passed before Hirokazu realized he had yet to master the technique. As he turned towards his peers, he noticed that each and every one of them were also struggling. The young ninja notified his sensei and began to train again on a third wound. Little by little, Hirokazu pushed the boundaries of his healing hands technique, making very slight advances in the amount of time required to heal the wound. The effort left his peers and himself slightly fatigued, prompting his sensei to dismiss them for a lunch break.

Once the students returned to the training room, they found that each pig had larger wounds inflicted onto their bodies. "You all don't have much time, they'll bleed out if you don't hurry," Tokido stated firmly. Each student hurried over to their pig and began to perform the healing hands technique. Hirokazu placed even more focus into the channeling of his chakra. As he continued to infuse more and more into the wound, the urgency of the task helped to expand the amount of chakra he was controlling. "This is a moderate wound. Two levels above what you are currently capable of. You need to infuse more chakra at a faster rate. That is the key. Think big and fast."

As his sensei finished his sentence, the pig to the left of him stopped breathing. His peers were unable to engage additional chakra to prevent its impending death. Hirokazu returned his focus to his pig after noticing his sensei come to the aide of his peer. After a few minutes of focus, Hirokazu noticed the clotting of the wound. His assessment of his progress brought him excitement as he realized he had greatly improved his healing hands.

On the cusp of mastering the technique, Hirokazu pushed the chakra out of his hands and felt the expansion of his chakra control follow. Hirokazu continued to heal the remainder of the pig's wound. The edges slowly began to make their way to one another, leaving Hirokazu more and more exhausted. After some time, the pig was completely healed of its wounds. The aspiring medical ninja had gained enhanced control over his chakra.

Hirokazu could feel the difference. With the healing of minor wounds, he sometimes found that small amounts of chakra would be lost inefficiently. That amount lessened significantly as both the amount he channeled, and the amount he could direct became much more proficient. Finding satisfaction from this realization, Hirokazu completed his day of training. He was one step closer to achieving his goals, and he had discovered the key to his continued progress in the medical field. It almost seemed as though this training had aided him in better grasping the type of control needed as a medical ninja.

A few days passed and with that, came additional opportunities. Hirokazu had improved his ability to heal others in such a short amount of time. The aspiring medical ninja felt more confident than he had in a long time. The hardwork he put in was beginning to pay off, and he was eager to continue his training. When Hirokazu returned to the clinic the following week, he was met with a surprise. "Now that I've confirmed how much potential you really have, we're gonna start tackling some less conventional methods of training. I owe it to your father. You're gonna be one mega hot shot medic once I'm done with you.", his sensei stated. At the mention of his father, Hirokazu's heart sunk and his eyes shifted downwards. Within a few seconds the feeling was gone, allowing Hirokazu to meet his sensei's eyes, "Thank you...for everything."

The rest of his day continued as normal. Hirokazu shadowed and supported other medical professionals and continued to gain patient experience. However, at the end of his shift, his sensei had ordered him to enter one of the procedure rooms. The brightly lit room brought back memories from his last training session and the unconscious pig on the floor was further reminder. "Again?" Kazu muttered aloud. "Yes, again. This will be a bit different though. You'll see". Hirokazu placed his belongings on the floor in the corner and sanitized his hands.

Within a few minutes, Hirokazu's sensei had made precise cuts using his Chakra scalpel. A moderate wound was inflicted within the pig's abdomen and back. " Begin." his sensei ordered. Hirokazu quickly assessed the pig acknowledging the exact areas injured. The abdomen wound was deeper and was more likely to have caused more internal damage. Within a few seconds, Hirokazu had channeled enough Chakra to heal light wounds. With his hands hovering above the wound, Hirokazu concentrated his medical Chakra.

The warmth emanating from the positive energy entered the wound. As Hirokazu guided the Chakra, he attempted to expel more and more of it through his hands. Within seconds he felt the extent of the toll that would be placed on his Chakra pool. He remembered how his sensei once described the jump from each wound level to be drastic. The eager ninja continued to expel Chakra into the wound while maintaining precise control.

“Focus more Chakra, Kazu. That's not enough.” his sensei demanded while closely evaluating Hirokazu's attempts. The young ninja felt more and more nervous as the training continued. Almost three hours had passed and he felt as though barely any progress was made. "Sensei, I'm exhausted. It's been a long day. Can we please continue tomorrow?"

The firm expression on his sensei's face softened as he gave Hirokazu a smile. "Go ahead and rest. We will continue tomorrow. But don't expect the same training session." Hirokazu as he nodded and left to go home. It felt as though only a few seconds had passed, yet Hirokazu was already in his bed. Three sheep later, and the young ninja was asleep.

The following day of training took place within a different procedure room. On the surgical table was the same pig from yesterday, sliced open by a large gash. Hirokazu sanitized his hands and began to pump Chakra into the space between his palms and the wound. Emboldened by his fierce determination, Hirokazu began to force additional Chakra past his usual threshold. The strain was apparent after a mere 10 minutes. While the amount of Chakra channeled had increased, his control had yet to match it, leaving the technique inefficient and wasteful of his Chakra.

More time had passed since he started improving his healing hands technique. Hirokazu developed more and more Chakra control, but continued to face difficulties. His sensei had warned him that it may take some time before he mastered the technique and the eager ninja was not use to being that patient. The next part of his training began with research. Hirokazu interviewed multiple advanced medical professionals within the clinic for advice. After conversing with multiple people, Hirokazu returned to the procedure room much more hopeful. With his belongings set on the table, Hirokazu awaited his sensei's return.

After an hour of practicing the healing hands technique, Hirokazu began to incorporate some of the advice given to him. He started by slowing the process down. He would no longer rush by exuding large amounts of chakra. Hirokazu began pushing the threshold of his control little by little ensuring he had mastered the small improvements before moving forward. After another wound had finally closed, the sensei inflicted another three wounds for Hirokazu to heal. Once the third wound had formed, Hirokazu took a deep breath and began to channel healing Chakra. His current level allowed him to heal the wound a tiny bit faster than usual. The difference in time was barely noticeable. 

As he looked toward the clock on the wall, Hirokazu sighed. Already the end of the day, he thought to himself, let me try to finish this day off with more to show. Hirokazu paused for a few seconds before tending to the final wound. Slower than usual, Hirokazu built up to his current level of the healing hands technique over a longer period of time. The ninja then pushed the boundary of his control and worked to maintain a steady channeling of more Chakra. The drain of this training began to show as his respiration rate increased slightly. Once the wound had closed, Hirokazu smiled and thanked himself internally. Positive affirmations had become a bit of a habit of his as he hoped to maintain his confidence during such a difficult training.

Hirokazu yawned as he entered the procedure room. He had made significant progress over his recent training sessions. Although he began to grow impatient, his sensei's encouragement had always reeled him in. The day's training began with supporting the clinic with wound healing. A number of patients had entered the clinic with various types of wounds. Some minor, some light, and a few of them moderate. His first patient had suffered a moderate wound to his abdomen while on a mission. Hirokazu had assessed the wound and noticed a significant amount of burn damage. Within moments he had begun to focus healing chakra over the wound. The young ninja was surprised to be working with patients in the middle of his training, but after a brief explanation from his sensei, he realized the reason for it. In order to better control his chakra, especially under serious circumstances, he needed to actually do so. 

The seriousness of the assignment left Hirokazu feeling immensely determined. As he focused the chakra into the wound, he pushed it further inwards to address the more internal injuries. The nature of the chakra allowed him to determine the extent of the internal burn damage. The wound began to show obvious signs of healing and Hirokazu was able to feel this through his chakra. As the chakra continued to imbue the patient's cells with enhanced healing properties, Hirokazu started to remove parts of his focus off of the control aspects and allowed a larger amount of chakra to be dispelled. The toll of this training method began to show as he felt both the control and channeling of chakra waver. 

After finishing with the first patient, Hirokazu was next assigned to a person with only a minor injury. The woman had injured her right forearm while cleaning her backyard. A jagged gash was engraved in her right arm. Once Hirokazu had sanitized his hands, he channeled an excess amount of chakra. While he only needed to use the basic form of the healing hands technique, Hirokazu took this opportunity to practice his control over much larger amount of chakra. Within a short amount of time, the wound closed and Hirokazu felt successful in his attempt to better the technique.

Hirokazu returned the following day prepared for his next training session. Rather than continue with patients, his Sensei had requested he return to the procedure room. Once Hirokazu had reached the location, two pigs were placed under sedation on two separate treatment tables. "Good morning sensei, are we expecting another student?", Hirokazu asked wondering if another student had began the same training. "Hey Kazu.", the sensei responded, "Nope, both are yours. It will be up to you to decide which one to heal first. Today is about assessment and swiftness. Begin". Hirokazu's expression shifted to a more serious one as he quickly walked over to the tables. After assessing the wounds of both pigs, Hirokazu decided to initiate emergency treatment to the one on the right. An even more detailed look at the pig's wounds had confirmed his choice. The pig had taken moderate wounds to it's stomach, while the other pig had suffered minor wounds. Within a few seconds, Hirokazu had initiated his healing hands technique, channeling substantial amounts of chakra into the pig's wound.

After a minute of healing, Hirokazu pushed more and more chakra out of his hands. It felt easier than it did the last time. Okay, he thought to himself, keep focusing on the chakra, you're doing well. The young ninja kept the process going until he noticed improvement in the wound. "Still not fast enough", he muttered to himself. More chakra began to flow from his hands as he continued. Hirokazu felt less strain than usual, a sign that both his chakra pool and chakra control had made strides forward. "Sensei, I'm getting better. I can feel the difference." Hirokazu continued his focus, leaving his sensei's response unclear to him. After completing the healing of the pig's wound, Hirokazu quickly healed the second pig within a much shorter period of time.

Hirokazu allowed himself a lunch break before repeating the session. However, his sensei had increased the difficulty by inflicting internal wounds within the pigs. Both were suffering from moderate wounds that would require Hirokazu to push the limit of his technique. Within seconds, Hirokazu infused chakra into one of the wounds. He could sense the damage through his chakra as the wound's healing process hastened. The increased chakra control he developed had allowed him to push larger and larger amounts of chakra. Once the first pig had been healed, he moved to the second. The change in it's vital signs had led Hirokazu to believe that the wound had led to increasing damage. Sweat dripped from his forehead as the chakra he infused into the wound revealed that the pig's health moved into the range to be considered serious. Fuck, he thought to himself, Sensei must have anticipated this would happen.

The second pig would prove to be much more difficult. A serious wound would require a significant amount of time to heal. Hirokazu quickly began expanding the amount of chakra channeled through his hands. The warmth of the positive energy began to enhance the pig's healing speed. As the energy worked its way to the pig's intestines, additional chakra began to pour from his hands. It was easier for him to commit more and more chakra to the technique, but the control of it took a great toll. Exhaustion began to take effect, but Hirokazu's resolve never wavered. 

As Hirokazu's hands continued to hover over the wound, a slight feeling of dizziness passed over him. Today had been especially taxing on him. "You okay?". his sensei questioned as he noticed a slight change in his posture. The young ninja nodded as he continued to channel his chakra. Just the movement of his head up and down had caused him to feel even more unsteady. In order to better stabilize himself, Hirokazu bent at his knees slightly and returned his focus. Am I pushing myself to hard, he thought. The wound on the pig began to show signs of improvement, but he knew better. He was still a long way from completing the healing process. "You're starting to channel a lot of chakra, Kazu, that's a really good sign. And in such a short amount of time." Hirokazu smiled at his sensei's praise. Let's hope I make it through this last part, Kazu thought as his breathing rate increased.

After an extended period of time, the pig's wound came close to closing. His positive, healing energy had become easier for him to control and channel throughout his hands. Before the wound could fully close, Hirokazu felt his knees give out. Within seconds his body had lost the energy to stand and the ninja fell to the ground. The chakra he had channeled completely dissipated. Before he passed out, Hirokazu noticed how only a small amount of chakra was coursing through his body. The Genin felt his sensei's arms wrapped around him. Hirokazu lost consciousness from that moment on and everything went black.

The bright light of the procedure room stung his eyes as they opened. Hirokazu's body felt almost completely drained as his sensei placed a cold glass of water in his hands. "Thank you" , Hirokazu responded as he gulped the water down. The cracks in his lips were instantly moistened and the painfully dry swallowing subsided. "You really pushed yourself hard there Kazu. You gotta be more mindful". The young ninja made eye contact with his sensei as he pondered how he would respond. Hirokazu understood that he needed to be careful, but a part of him felt the need to defend himself, " Sensei, you always tell me that being a medic is about sacrifi--". "No!" , his sensei shouted, "you've misunderstood. Yes you must sacrifice, but not to the point where you become completely ineffective. Passing out like that would make you a burden. Don't do it again." Hirokazu felt the need to response, but managed to quell that impulsive urge. With the training session over, the ninja left with a lot to mull over. 

His weekend away from the clinic provided him a chance to regain his strength. On the day he returned, his sensei had waited for him in the same procedure room. One pig awaited Hirokazu on the treatment table. "Hope you're feeling refreshed Hirokazu, I have a feeling that today will be your last day of training this technique. I hope you prove me right." The determined Benin smiled with excitement and relief. The events of the previous training session left him worried all weekend, but this confirmed that he had nothing to worry about. 

Shortly after the conversation ended, Hirokazu was prompted to begin the healing process. The pig's wounds were moderate and demanded precise control over the healing hands technique. With Chakra being channeled through his hands, Hirokazu felt confident and ready to successfully utilize his skills. The warmth of the Chakra began to produce steam from the pig's wounds. Each second that passed gave way to more and more of the damage being healed. The control he demonstrated evoked a sense of pride in the ninja. Success was seemingly at his finger tips.

Hirokazu continued to produce Chakra from his palms. The greenish glow of the healing energy vibrated throughout the pig's wound. His sensei approached the pig and observed the wounds progress. Wonderful, the sensei thought to himself. Hirokazu continued to infuse chakra into the cells of the pig. Each cell became empowered with advanced healing properties. So many cells had been placed under Hirokazu's direct influence, a feat that required significant Chakra control. 

The aspiring medical ninja began to review all he had learned these past weeks. Increased Chakra channeling was required to heal higher wound levels. This led to increased control of said Chakra. As he continued to maintain control, Hirokazu became more and more familiar with the healing hands technique. Today's prompt felt much easier to complete and the toll on his body was much less than previous days. The ninja smiled as the wound began to close. The steam that emanated from the wound vanished as the pig had been completely healed. 

His sensei clicked the button of his stop-watch. "Outstanding, Kazu". Hirokazu smiled in response as he stepped away from the pig. "I feel like I understand it better" , Hirokazu stated. "Understand what better?". 

"How the technique works. How one's Chakra control and flow really dictate the speed and effectiveness of the healing hands technique." His sensei nodded and patted the ninja on his back. "Things are going to be different from here on out", his sensei stated. Their eyes made contact and Kazu's determination left his sensei feeling proud.

Description: Relevant Abilities: Perception Skill. Die Rolls: 1 Die Roll. Check Requirement: Described. This skill allows the character to properly tend to the sick and injured. While some basic medical knowledge is inherent in this skill (to the extent such can be said to exist), the character’s role is to provide an optimal environment to facilitate the patient’s own recuperative abilities, by monitoring the patient and tending to his needs as required. The most basic need for any patient is food and drink. The nursing character ensures that the injured party is drinking sufficient fluids and provided with food that he can keep down (and in fact does so). Additional responsibilities include changing bandages, keeping watch for infections and excessive bleeding and applying cold compresses to relieve fever. First Aid providers can also perform critical care (a.k.a. battlefield medicine). If they can tend to a wound within an hour of it being inflicted (and make a successful Average difficulty skill check), their palliation restores 1 Armour Point of damage from that wound. Note that each individual wound may only be treated once - if the remedy is botched no subsequent aid is possible. Injured characters under the care of a First Aid provider (of at least Novice mastery) heal their wounds significantly faster, reducing the number of rest days required by one per category (a full day cannot be reduced below 1). When a caregiver becomes a Master of First Aid, he reduces the number of rest days required by two per category and can fictionalize days at the end of the healing process. It was an emergency! Tetsu had been paged to come in and attend to a patient as there were transporting this person from the scene of a collapse at a construction site. The fellow had been impaled thought the stomach with some rebar, and he seemed to be convulsing due to hemorrhagic shock. As the gurney burst thought the doors of the ER, Tetsu quickly pulled on some nitril gloves and adjusted his coat, putting pressure on the wound with a gauze pad as the KMP EMT passed off the patient. "Heart Rate is 69 bmp, BP is 80/50. Patient currently hypotensive and losing a substantial amount of blood. We have administered blackberry paste." This jargon was common procedure among medical staff, as the patient was now passed into ER care.

Tetsu quickly cast status on the patient to get a better idea of what the surgeons and attending ER doctors were looking at. He only confirmed what the EMTs had told him already, realizing that there was internal hemorrhaging and some serious damage to the colon, due to the impalement. Tetsu packed the wound, watching as the cotton cloth quickly turned a deep red hue as the fellow bleed more and more. He needed to be prepared for an emergency laparotomy, with the objective of removing the object and repairing any perforated organs. We need a surgical ward prepped stat! Tetsu could tell that if they were not swift with this operation, then this patient would not make it...and casting revival jutsu was expensive and costly. The medical bill would be much more suited to having a major surgery.

First Aid Training

Tetsu draped himself with a sterilized gown as he put on new glove and put a mask over his face. His condition sensing glasses would be serving as the monitors for the operation as his face mask on after washing his hands and putting on his gloves. The patient's name was Ju-Han Lee, a local laborer who had fallen on the job. Tetsu ran the surgical objective though his head multiple times as he mentally visualized the type of operation they would be preforming. Interestingly enough, Tetsu's assistant Dr. Kimberly Vaughn, quickly scrubbed in and brought with her a pair of steel cutters. The larger tool was often used by KMP officers to cut locks but this had a different purpose. "what are you going to do with that?" He asked as he watched the patient's vitals waiver as the nurse did her best to establish some supportive care. His condition would be manageable via chakra healing once the object was removed. Chakra was extremely powerful but was not a miracle worker. Good ole fashion medicine had it's place, even in the world of the ninja.

Tetsu didn't get a response from his assistant as she gestured to the object that was sticking out of the guy. She was going to carefully cut the object short to help with the removal of it. Tetsu waited patiently as she cut the metal piece short and he carefully plotted out his incision sites around the object. He would open up an incision, vertically along the abdomen, and would cut around the object to carefully remove the suction barrier that had been created with the object. He would then use his healing technique to heal the fellow along the way and would use a cauterizing pen for the rest of need be. He carefully removed some of the gauze and focused his chakra into his fingers. It was time to cut along the object and cut it out. This was a dangerous procedure, but it was something that he would have to do to save the life of this poor man who had loved ones waiting for him in the lobby. It was his duty as a doctor, and physician to do his very best to care for this man.

First Aid

He had removed the object, but the bleeding was still quite severe. He had packed the wound and was using his healing hands to casually heal the torn tissue as he prepared a suturing kit to use to reconnect the perforated colon. This was a serious situation. He was working to do four things at once as his partner took over the chakra healing, so that he could work on the patient. He used his gloved hand to collect the torn intestines, and carefully moved them closer to their corresponding parts. He noticed that there was quite a bit of bile and fecal matter that had escaped into the thoracic cavity. "ah shit" He mumbled underneath his mask as he gestured for his assistant to hand him the drain, which he used to suck up the liquid and bile so that he could see any ulcerations or other tears were. He took a syringe filled with concentrated blackberry pulp, and used it to stop some of the bleeding inside the wound as he cauterized the ulcers using the cautery pen.

He carefully began to suture up the intestines, attaching the long fleshy tubes together so that there would be no gaps in between. Once he had finished, he felt confident closing up their incision. He pulled out all their surgical clamps and tools, carefully making sure that they left nothing within the thoracic cavity. He sutured up the site and applied some peroxide antiseptic before bandaging the fellow's abdomen. He finished up and checked the fellow's BP to make sure that the pressurization had returned to the the fellow's cardiovascular system. He was pleased with the results and watched as some nurses wheeled the fellow out into a separate room as the cleaning staff began to disinfect the ward. He quietly went into the observation area and took of his gloves, washing his hands as he removed his surgical gown, exposing his scrubs beneath. He spoke not a word to his assistant as she blared out the post surgical brief. Tetsu took the fellow's chart and quickly updated it, applying the closing BP, BPM, RPM, and the status of his surgery. Working as a doctor was quite stressful.

Tetsu was lounging about now. He had taken a snack break and a short nap to let his chakra recover as he prepared to address his next patient. There was an elderly man, diagnosed with COPD, or Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Some might think that casting cure disease might be an easy fix for such a condition; however the chronic nature of the condition made it impossible to completely fix it with a ritual. He seemed to be having an Emphysema flair that was causing him to come down with a case of pneumonia. He was coughing up pus and was unable to breath properly. In medical terminology, the fellow was suffering from Dyspnia and had a low respiration rate. Tetsu put on a fresh pair of gloves as he prepared to speak with the fellow.

"Hello Mr. Lupin? Hi, I'm your attending physician today, and I'll be doing your check up and seeing what we can do for you." He expressed as he looked the fellow up and down. He was elderly, according to his chart he was 80 years old and had a history of smoking, which was common with COPD. He likely needed a steroid, a needle aspiration to reduce the pelural effusion, and a strong antibiotic to help out with the bacterial infection. Tetsu noticed the fellow's strained breaths, but also recognized that the fellow seemed to be sweating and a bit clammy. His facial expression seemed like it was in pain, but he made no complaint as he answered Tetsu's questions. Tetsu took the fellow's blood pressure and he was very hypertensive, with a slightly concerning heart rate. Tetsu adjusted his glasses as he pulled out his stethoscope and asked the fellow to gently pull up his shirt. He moved the metal disc along the fellow's chest, and he was equally concerned by the strange presence of an arrhythmia. The sound was irregular, which meant he would have to keep this fellow over night for observation after they had administered medication.
