Ashi moved through the park with care; this late at night, it was important not to wake anybody who would be around, as what he was going could be viewed in a more accusatory description of events. He was planning on trying out a new technique that he had seen demonstrated not by a ninja, but by a circus member: the flame breather.
Reaching an area that he considered effectively deserted, Ashi quickly unloaded his pack. He set down the fireproofed cloth he had "borrowed" from the school that he would return next thing tomorrow; a small gourd of high proof sake that would burn his throat if he drank it (pun intended), and a lunchbox, containing both vast amounts of water in case something went wrong, and a sandwich, in cast he got hungry. Ashi took one more look around to see that nobody was watching, and sat down to meditate.
He thought about what he had seen: the man had taken a mouthful of liquid from what smelled like hard liquor even from a distance, then held up a torch and expelled the liquid as a fine mist, which ignited as it passed through the flames. Ashi's ultimate goal was to be able to do this without either liquor or torch, but with only chakra and the fire element.
Analyzing what he had seen, Ashi quickly narrowed the technique down into a small number of separate parts. Obviously, he could eliminate the intake of liquor from the equation as it was not essential for his final plan. However, there were still 4 main steps: the preparation, where the user prepared for what was going to happen and began to set up for it; the inhale, which was the intake of oxygen and the mixing of liquor with air in the mouth; the shaping, where the breather moved his lips in such a way that the combined mixture would be expelled as a fine mist; and the final exhale, where the user forcefully expelled the mixture from their mouth through the fire and into a large gout of flame that shot out for a good distance.
Taking it step by step, Ashi began the preparation by breathing the flame once with the strong alcohol. It wasn't difficult for a ninja; imibibe, inhale, exhale. Like walking and chewing gum. Ashi was relieved that this part of the exercise was as easy as he had predicted, due to the fact that he felt the next part would be the hardest: the removal of the alcohol factor from the equation, instead replacing it with pure chakra.
Ashi now stood over the unrolled fireproofed cloth, preparing for some pain on the first few tries. He inhaled, and quickly focused his chakra into his mouth and lungs, mixing it with air in there and preparing for the release. After a short time, he cupped his hands around his mouth on either side and exhaled, pushing out the chakra from his mouth and lungs. As it passed through the corridor of his hands, Ashi focused a small flame in the middle of them to light the flame chakra he was releasing. To Ashi's surprise, it worked on the first try! Ashi accidentally gulped in excitement; bad idea when breathing fire. Reaching urgently for his water, Ashi drained an entire bottle in one gulp, a thin tendril of steam wafting out of his open, panting mouth.
In retrospect, however, Ashi realizes that the technique had not worked. The flame had sputtered, fizzled, and only traveled a small distance. Realizing that the independent factor in this equation must be the ratio between natural airflow and chakra, Ashi prepared to do this again. To test the scale, Ashi applied the minimal amount of chakra and a maximum amount of air. As he expected, he just instantly extinguished the flame hovering over his thumb. Slowly, he worked his way through possible combinations, ending with a blast of near pure chakra that was not only extremely volatile, but also extremely localized. Ashi had quickly stopped that one, and his hands were still pulsing red, even after he had poured 1/2 his remaining water supply over them.
In terms of distance, the best combination had been 3/4 air, 1/4 chakra; in power, it was 3/4 chakra and 1/4 air. Realizing this pattern, Ashi tried the experiment one more time. Gauging how much air he took in, Ashi tried to match the air as exactly as he could with chakra; the law of averages meant that this would be a steady stream of flame with a medium distance. Ashi exhaled this mixture, and it perfectly resembled the display of the circus performer. However, there was still more to be improved upon, as there always was: duration, minimalizing chakra expenditure, etc... However, for now Ashi was satisfied. Looking at the position of the moon and the amount of light in his area, Ashi judged he still had some more time to work on techniques before he had to pack up and leave.
10/10
Fire Style: Inferno Technique
Rank: D
Skill: Ninjutsu
Effect: Shoots small gout of flame towards the opponent.
Special: Ox, Monkey, Rabbit, Tiger
Drawback: Requires the user to exhale and keep their dominant hand cupped over their mouths. Once the user is out of breath of moves their hand, the technique falls.
Description: The user performs the handseals, energizing their hand and their esophagus with chakra. The user then cups their hand over their lips and exhales. The oxygen being expelled from the lungs combusts upon reaching the chakra from the hand, and the user blows it out a maximum of ten feet away. This is different from the Goukakyou no Jutsu in the fact that this comes out as a stream and not a fireball, and also different from the fact that once the user stops breathing out or moves their hand, the technique ends.
Limit: Fire Release
