Introduction
I awoke and the first thing I heard was the soft sound of the morning breeze blowing in through my open window and fluttering the thin curtains gently. For what must’ve been an hour, I stayed awake with my eyes closed- contemplating nothing, relaxing in the comfort of my mattress. The room was dim, not a single source of illumination except for the thin rays of sunlight that filtered through the curtained window. Below I could hear people moving around, their footsteps echoing through the hollowed and cheap walls. I managed to ignore them- for the most part- until the old lady downstairs started yelling again. This time she complained to her husband about not taking out the trash yesterday and from the moment he responded I knew my peace was ruined and sat upright in my bed. Why couldn’t he just shut up and nod like all the other husbands in Kumogakure? Now she’d be complaining the whole day. Some people never learn.
I swung my legs off the side of the bed with a bothered huff of breath and got up to stretch, flexing muscles that hadn’t been used in a long time. My days after graduating the Academy had been blending in with each other lately- taking strolls in parks, eating out and dozing off. I hadn’t seen any action or exercise in days, and it was making me considerably restless. My various duties as a Cloud shinobi should have kept me busy, but I was still fresh on the block- the new guy, stumbling around, trying to find something to do but always a step behind someone else.
Well, I guess it wasn’t all that bad. The nice weather in the land of Thunder kept my spirits up at least. Spirits… wine. I want some wine.
With a sluggish yawn and a droopy, half-asleep gaze, I went to take a shower. Today I’d find something to do- I’d make sure of it.
…
I emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later, steam wafting out the door behind me, and dried off my wavy brown hair with a small towel. My clothing still lay across the mattress where I’d placed them before showering: a pair of boxers, white socks, black trousers, a long-sleeved black shirt and my headband. I placed them all on, tying the headband around the upper half of my left shoulder, and strode over to the curtained window. I stopped inches from the window and glanced down at my headband. Azazelo- the Cloud ninja. I was still getting used to the title.
With a sleepy smile, I turned back to the window and flung the curtains open, flooding my apartment with the blessed sunlight of Kaminari no Kuni. I relished in its warmth for a while and leaned over the windows frame to take in the view.
Kumogakure was a very large city, its conservatively built structures standing erect for as far as the eye could see, and at the bottom of my six-story apartment complex I could see its people- the life and blood of the city- walking down the street, heading towards their jobs and starting off their duties for the day. The streets would be packed, further into the morning, so I released a content sigh and spun around on my heels. Striding over to the tiny closet at the corner of the room, I pulled out my favorite hooded poncho- a tan-colored piece of clothing weaved with a yellow and red decoration along its edges- and slid it on over my long-sleeved black shirt. After tying on my all-terrain black boots, I grabbed my mother’s rosary off the small bedside drawer and wrapped it around my right wrist swiftly- trying my best not to delve into thoughts of her this early in the morning.
Within the top drawer of my cabinet is where I kept all of my equipment- my knives, my grenades, my bolas, my makibishi, my darts- and I swiftly strapped them all on my person with precise and focused movements. After filling up the last of my butt bags with frag grenades, I reached for the sheathed machete leaning against the end of the bed, holstered it to my belt, and left my secluded apartment.
