"It's an honor to have one such as you come in person to investigate this problem, Otokage-sama. This mess will finally be cleaned up and people can move on..." came the wheedling voice of the Head Clerk as he rifled through a filing cabinet for something. Mayu was in the Mayor's office of Meikyoku, the Capital City of Oto no Kuni, with the Head Clerk in typical sycophantic nature trying his best to shower her with agreement and praise.
The apparent mission at hand was simply to investigate the recent deaths of a few teenagers that had occurred in one of the oldest buildings in Meikyoku, the first and now abandoned Mayoral residence. Subject to some dubious history that was almost completely unknown, probably due to some deletion of records that was common when Shinobi were involved, the Mayoral residence had seen dozens of disappearances near its halls over the last eighty years. Each and every time the corpses were found within the front foyer of the mansion. This had died away in the last twenty years, the rumors of it fading, until the most recent corpses of a group of teenagers was found, again in the foyer, without a mark on them. Autopsy reports couldn't find anything wrong with the corpses. They were all healthy young teenagers who just happened to have died for no apparent reason.
With the sudden occurrence of death the citizens were in an uproar, and with the political pressure on him rising the current Mayor had called in the Otogakure Shinobi to handle the problem before it became an issue that threatened his career. Not to mention that if the problem was handled the Mayor could move back into the Mayoral residence, which really was an opulent place to live. The incentive for Mayu to do this was clear, because even beyond the Mayor himself the Oto Daimyo had given Mayu notice that he had an interest in reclaiming this building for the Government, and that he'd owe her a “favor” if she handled it personally. Given the sort of thing it took for a Daimyo to consider giving a “favor” would no doubt have piqued Mayu's curiosity at the same time it raised red flags...
“I'm afraid we don't have too much information to actually give you besides the Autopsy reports and Missing Persons notices, Otokage-sama. No one has been able to live in the Mayoral Residence for nearly a century now, and what few records there are on the subject all just cite a 'powerful sense of malevolence' in the mansion. I'm sure a powerful Shinobi such as yourself will have this matter cleared up by tomorrow though!” the Head Clerk continued, finally pulling out the information he had been digging in his filing cabinet for and handing the thick manilla folder to Mayu. Inside would be exactly what the Head Clerk had claimed, Autopsy reports, missing persons claims, obituaries, and a short history of the building in question from its time of building around two hundred years ago to the time just short of when it became inhabitable.
“Good luck, Otokage-sama. The Mayor wishes you quick success as well.”
