The creature squeaked and froze in terror, torn between remaining still and running. Before it could decide the girl grabbed it. The dank fur was covered in mud and unknown ooze from the sewers. Such a combination would smear across her bosom and cheek as she cuddled the little creature. It continued to remain frozen, trying to decide what to do. Flee? Attack? Play dead?
As each of the three signed in blood the contracts were collected, folded, and placed into a leather folder before being taken from the room. At the question of the one the Queen would look upon him with raised brows. "Why, your blood will boil and kill you. As it has always been, so it shall always be. Even the gods cannot circumvent this." Her tone was one of surprise, for all in her land knew of blood oaths, though they were not commonly used.
Now she returned to her formality since all was done. "Again I thank you. I would not require such secrecy were it not for the fact that some enemy is working against my King." She explained. A servant offered her a glass from which she drank thankfully. The servant then moved to the others, offering them each a glass from his tray.
"It has been a fortnight since this began. King Tristan and I had just retired to our chambers. He was crossing our room when... a vaporous shadow descended upon him. He could barely shout as he clutched his heart. The force drove him to his knees. I cried for the guards. By the time they arrived the vapor was gone and the pain had began to subside." She paused for another drink of lemon water before continuing her tale.
"Within minutes he had recovered. He was tired of course, but he insisted on waiting till the 'morrow to see a healer. The next day he was fine. The healer said as much, as did he. It was another day before things began. He seemed... confused. His mind would wander at inopportune times and he would have to collect himself. The next day it continued, but now he fumbled his words. He would address people by incorrect names. This continued for another two days. Our courtiers began to wonder if something was amiss.
"By the seventh day he had fallen into complete delirium. His face and hair grew ashen. He began spouting the words of a mad man. I've made his excuses to the court. He is confined to our chambers now, with guards inside and outside the room. It has only grown worse since. Our chief healer is convinced a curse has sparked this madness and we agree. However the options for breaking this type of curse... well this is why we have called you." She took a heavy breath and another sip before wrapping up her story.
"The options are limited. This curse will certainly lead to his demise. Another two months could kill him. Though its a guess how long before the court rebels against my lead in his absence. Killing him would end the curse, which is of course not an option. There is said to an herb, high within the frozen mountains, that can cure any madness. It is incredibly rare however, and difficult to prepare. The other option is killing the one who sent the curse, or convincing them to reverse it, yet we have no idea who this person is." She had finished now and searched their faces for thoughts.
He nodded. "Heard of it." He confirmed. As the reptile requested specifics for the map he nodded. "Hunting eh? I should have something that has forests. Gotta know 'em for lumber at least." He turned to his daughter and smiled once more. "Be a dear and fetch the map lass? It'll be in my study, pinned up by the desk."
"Yes father!" She replied cheerfully before bouncing off to find the aforementioned item. As she left Camoc turned back to the young man. "Now Montaro, I've no objection to your friendship with my Clara." He explained, still smiling. "But I won't have her toyed with or hurt, understand?" His smile remained yet somehow it seemed more intimidating now. "Just be straight with her, and don't be thinkin' she'll be running off into the woods with ye."
Before Montaro had a chance to reply Clara would return with the map. "Here!" She said brightly, holding it out for Montaro to see. "Does this have what you need?" She asked, holding out a map of the kingdom. Land features and cities were all marked, though the words were of course in Latin. The symbols for mountains, forest, and rivers were all easily discernible however.
