Working in a less than stellar environment had actually gotten him to used to such a thing. While he lacked many basic provisions that one would be accustomed to in the lab setting he had made his own makeshift versions. Such a startling ability to overcome setbacks would definitely transfer over to working in a real lab setting.
There were various examples of improvised equipment about his lab, but one of the most prime examples were beakers. While beakers were simple objects made of glass that could be used to accurately measure and heat things, it was strikengly hard to create something by hand that mimiced them. Normal glass would not be able to be heated without blackening the glass, and other materials wouldn't heat in a measureable way. Thus, he had no choice but to use basic glass cups of which the contents were measured precisely each time. Each drop of liquid or material had to be carefully placed, and each pour of material from the basic glassware had to be expertly managed.
The graduated tubes used for cast off gases were a simple plastic tubing concocted of something you'd see used in aquarium equipment or for pneumatic devices. They ran connected together with rubber portions to not let any gasses escape and fed into other handmade beaker-likes. As to not corrode the tubes measured amounts needed to be a smaller portion than normal, and heat had to be applied slower (this went doubly so as to not blacken the beakers).
Working in such small and precise amounts, with such shoddy equipment allowed him to gain insight into a level of careful precision many individuals never reached. Good equipment allowed people to make mistakes or take huge liberties on how careful they were with things. With this, just one small mishap could blow everything sky-high.
As Tachibana sat mixing chemicals at his makeshift workplace, he couldn't help but long for the day where he would be using something greater.
