In this particular situation Johan, would make up one of her test dummies, she was not going to do anything cruel to the animal far from it, but she did want to observe him and take note of the size of his paws and the tracks they left, she could factor this into her future endeavours, when it came to tracking hyaenodons that is. Which as it turned out was quite frequent. So by using this information, she could measure the creature's size relative to Johan, and also their weight from the depth of the impressions.
One of the things the document mentioned that Yoko had never through to look into before was the use of foreign elements. Dirt was dirt to her, but apparently, there was a difference between the dirt from different regions, through trained eyes one could observe these differences, and know that a particular seed on the floor was actually from a different region, meaning it had been trailed there by some kind of creature.

This was, of course, all useful information for a tracker as if it was the region his pray was fleeing from then he could know with a higher degree of certainty that they had fled through this area. The youth also learned that she could extrapolate from the markings whether or not they were from a known creature, if she knew her quarry’s footprints then she could element the markings of others from her tracking information to build up a better picture of where they had ventured to.
The same application could also occur for the number of people or animals passing through an area, apparently, there are small changes that can indicate the exact number of passing animals, and whether or not it was just one or two rogues trying to create the impression of numerous people. Through diligent study, the youth also learned how to tell if someone had retraced their steps and quite literally attempted to walk back over their own footsteps.

Yoko thought that now was the time to train her riding skill: it had occurred to her that riding Johan around could make for a rather strong battle combination. She would be free to fire off arrows as she pleased, and the superior speed of her mount meant that it was extremely difficult to catch up and effectively strike her. That combined with their innate teamwork really lent itself towards this kind of training.
But where to start, how did one ride a massive hyena-like creature? Well for a start Johan had never been mounted before, so he would have to get used to the feeling that was for sure. So, the youth set to work reassuring her companion and mounting him. At first, he was quick to buck, and judder around, clearly showing quite an amount of displeasure with the situation. But quickly began to remember his place. He was after all a male, in a female dominated society, female spotted hyenas were the dominators of the pack, and as such he soon began to submit.

Even so, this was not the situation Yoko wanted it to be in, so she returned the next day determined to continue the training, and make her companion more comfortable with the situation. Sure, she could mount him, but if he felt discomfort with the situation she wanted to change things, so that it was a win-win for both of them, as such she started by giving her companion slightly more meat than he normally gets and continued the theme throughout the day.
Whenever he performed well she rewarded him with a treat, positively reinforcing the situation whilst still maintaining the dominant position. He was after all a large creature, to her small stature, so it was always key that they maintained a working relationship. Alas even after a full days training, the hyena was still showing signs of discontent, clearly he was not fond of the idea even with all the treats he was receiving so Yoko would have to try again tomorrow.

Yoko arrived at the training grounds extra early today, she had been into the middle of the village to a specialised shop and acquired a special harness for her companion. She hoped by fitting it to him she could at least start to build on her fundamental riding knowledge and start to attempt a few of the more complex skills that she would need to be able to utilise with ease in a combat situation. Foremost amongst these was the ability to guide her mount--in this case Johan--with her feet.
If she was to hold a bow and fire at opponents, then she would need to be able to control her mount without using her hands. It really was just that simple. So, to achieve this goal she set about riding the animal at a slow pace about the training ground, trying her best to alter the direction at random so that they did not just walk the same generic path. She wanted Johan to learn the commands, rather than learn the route.

It was not long before she started to see results, the first few laps were relatively slow, but things did start to pick up on the second day of this form of training, it certainly seemed that the additional spending on a specialised saddle was a good investment. Now if only she knew what to do next, she had raised Johan to understand various concepts such as fire and combat so the chances of her mount becoming panicked in combat seemed lessened.
But even so she needed to come up with a strategy in case he did, in fact, become panicked she needed to be able to calm him in an atypical manner, as she could not use her hands, nor would she be able to fire her bow off in the confusion? Was certainly a situation she wanted to avoid, so she purposely did a few sessions in which her companion was placed under a mild degree of stress in order to test out his reaction and how she personally handled it.

The focus of today’s training was learning how to jump, or rather how to make Johan jump when she wanted him to rather than when he so desired. Now of course as an animal handler she could train her companion to do this, but could the same be said about any mount? No, so it was in her mind vital that she develop this skill for future use on the battlefield. So far she had mastered jumping small distances, a meter fence, or over a hole a few meters wide.
But she had been ultimately unsuccessful on her first few attempts of jumping a larger distance, not due to an innate failure of the jump but rather her companion pulled up, perhaps he was not confident in his ability to jump the distance despite doing so when she was beside him. Was her weight really that much of a limiting factor, surely know given how light she was. So instead the youth decided to drill the skill over and over to see a continued improvement in the distance the animal would willing jump.

By the sixth day Yoko was really turning up the notch, her companion now seemed used to her presence so much so that he expected it. And they were now hunting together as rider and mount as opposed to both on foot. The new skill that Yoko was now working on was the use of a burst of speed, namely pushing Johan to his limit. At a walking pace, Johan was able to comfortably cover fifty foot per six seconds. But when he got up to a real sprint he could cover four times that figure.
Through consistent training she was able to spur Johan on, so even this speed was increased by a large amount, it made her mount very fast, very fast indeed. For a run that is. Now, of course, it was sub-shunshin tier, but what more could she ask for, her opponents would certainly struggle to keep up that is for sure. One thing she did note, however, was the level of stress it put the animal under he was visibly panting at the end of the training session. This suggested that Yoko should not be to trigger happy with its application in the future.

Wow, a week had passed already? And what an improvement there had been, Yoko had mastered a great deal of the fundamental skills and even progressed onwards to some of the more advanced ones, even those had turned out to be rather easy. She guessed she could even be thought of as a master. She had learned all manner of exotic tricks her particular favourite one at the moment was vaulting onto Johan’s saddle.
With a bit of a run-up, she explodes off the floor, jumping into the sky and landing on her companion. What was even more impressive was her ability to reliably perform this skill in armour, with Johan moving at quite some speed. She felt like a true escape artist now, the kind of thing you would see in a movie, such a casual yet style escape she was sure it would come in useful in the heat of battle. It even opened up the possibility to switch mounts whilst moving.

Sidestep Charge Rank: "C" Always 20 TP Skill: TaiJutsu Effect: User is skilled at Dodging Charging opponents and taking advantage when they miss. Special: --- Drawback: --- Description: The user waits against an opponent. If a charging opponent fails to hit the user, the user can immediately attack with a movement attack without having to sacrifice one of their movements. This technique does not grant the user more movements than they normally would during a counter attack. If the user is flat-footed, they do not gain the benefit of this technique. Most Ranged characters like an Alchemist are focused on charge attacks fairly often as it is a way to close in distance from the user and the opponent. Combined with Skirmishing, the user can become a pretty challenging target while on the move. Limit: Must be an Alchemist.

Having practised her riding skills of what she felt was a sufficient period of time, the youth decided to move on, from theory to a real application of a battlefield manoeuvre. So, as she led Johan to the training ground like normal there was a slight alternation, she did not mount him. Instead, he was to pose as the attacker in this little simulate. With any hope, they could both increase their respective skill sets, Yoko could learn to dodge, and Johan improves his attacks.
The fundamental principle behind the technique was a simple one, the ranged damage per second was often focused down, in fact, it was pretty suboptimal in most situations to do anything but focus them. In a team, you could assume a basic composition, front like a tank style they wanted to soak up damage and draw attention, then you had the battlefield control genjutsu masters or the burst damage ninjutsu users.
The marksman, however, had the advantage of high levels of sustained damage, if you allowed a marksman to free fire you would almost certainly lose. So being away of this, opponents are likely to rush the burst damage dealers and or the marksman, this can be intern adopted the strategy: if you know you are going to be rushed by an enemy you can prepare countermeasures. And that was exactly what this training session entailed, Johan was to charge Yoko whilst she attempted to dodge.

Being able to sidestep an attack and follow up with one of your own, was certainly an enticing prospect. With it, Yoko could use her point-blank-shot to devastating effect. If anything, she was even stronger at this range, with her shots capable of punching straight through shields and sturdy armour. Due to the nature of the set up as well the opponent would be unable to react with some kind of bullshit attack, as melee combatants tried to do all too often swiping at the marksman before they could fire their arrow.
Again, and again, the pair drilled the combat procedure over and over, clearly both parties were improving Johan’s attacks were coming closer and closer with each passing moment, whilst Yoko evasive maneuvers were getting faster and faster, it really was too close to call, was Yoko evading more strikes than she was delivering? Clearly, this would be of use on the battlefield, when an opponent tried to charge Yoko she could evade the attack, and when Johan pressed the assault he would be used to watching lines of evasion, increasing the probability that his strike connects.

Having successfully mastered the last defensive manoeuvre Yoko saw fit to learn how to perform a similar thing but when mounted. So, she led her companion out onto the training ground, still early in the morning, saddled him up and began riding him around the area. After they were sufficiently warmed up she started to practise this new technique, a rapid shift of her body weight, so that she could dip, and dodge incoming attacks, in some cases dropping down beside Johan to evade an attack altogether.
Of course, this technique required training by both parties, the sudden shift of weight could easily bring the mount off balance, and whilst they were currently moving at a walking pace, the youth hated to think what would happen if they were going at Johan’s maximum speed, falling over at this pace could injure both parties. So, one of the main focuses of the training was not just the flexibility to manoeuvre herself over the large hyena, but also to ensure the centre of mass was not adjusted too much.
Fortunately, the difference in weight the pair shared was quite large, Yoko being small to the hyena’s large body size, so her movements only made up a small portion of the total weight. However, she could, in theory, apply this technique to other mounts, so needed to ensure she learned to do it correctly for the universal application rather than just for her specific mount.

Today's lesson was as much Yoko’s as it was Johan’s she decided it was an apt opportunity to theorise about the use of a pack, and as such derive the so-called benefit of ‘strength in numbers’. Of course, this was basically an innate technique for the Inuzuka clan, given their whole lifestyle revolves around the use of a pack and superior numbers. But either way, reinforcing the lesson and learning the theory behind it could hurt now could it.
As a matter of fact this technique was of particular use for Yoko’s desired combat style, if she was going to ride Johan around, it was only natural the genjutsu masteries and other illusionists would target the pair of them with area of effect techniques, no doubt if they had the opportunity of selecting a single target they would just select the lower intelligence animal, but still it was fair to assume a number of situations would arise in which the pair were the target rather than a singular entity.
So how did one go about accomplishing this form of training, well presumably exposure, or at least that was Yoko’s preferred method. Throughout the day she continually drilled Johan and herself to condition a reaction to the area-of-effect techniques, the pair could use each other to lessen the effects, that was the bare basics of it. One of the simplest examples—and one that Yoko drilled on the first day—was the exposure to gore, with her companion beside her she felt that even a massacre would have trouble shaking her.
7 Apr 20, 08:57 Loki QB: and loli's are main characters #17a589
The next day the animal's training was intensified, as was Yoko’s, she had spent the full night trying to find cool applications of the technique, some seemed to defy all logic. Instead of operating on some level of power of friendship, perhaps there was a logical explanation to these effects but Yoko found it appealing to believe she was the main character in an anime. One such application was a gas attack, generally defined as a Fortitude save, failing against a toxic gas can cripple or even kill the subject.
So, the youth was relieved to learn that even these types of attacks were less effective when she had her companion beside her. Perhaps it was simply a phycological effect, with her companion with her she felt more confident. And perhaps Johan mirrored this effect back, who knew she certainly was not going to dwell on it that was for sure. All she knew was out of twenty or so applications of the same poison the duo had notably fewer symptoms when they were together rather than apart.
But what else could the technique be applied to? Yoko spend much of the day thinking about this, clearly, genjutsu was the next logical progression but what came after that? Was that everything? Either way, Yoko needed to recruit the aid of a genjutsu user for the next part of the training so ventured into the village to recruit a bit of aid. A friendly fellow agreed to aid her tomorrow so they arranged to meet on the training fields.

With a new day came new challenges, the genjutsu master met the pair and was swift with his teaching. Deft fingers danced through seals, conjuring up wild images in Yoko’s mind, at one stage she was staring down a pink elephant, quite the strange thing to observe. However, she found comfort in having her companion so close by, and actually began to note the subtle changes of when he was under the effect of the same genjutsu as her.
Johan’s change in body language and posture indicated that he had observed something strange even if he was unable to verbally express this in the common tongue, Yoko could use this knowledge alongside what she herself was perceiving in order to determine if something really was real. For example, if she saw a fireball, and Johan did not then clearly something was amiss. Perhaps it was this higher level of teamwork, that was the source of the benefit?
