It was time to take the training up a notch. Yoko was to continue practising in her own individual art while her companion Barbas—the kirin—started to hone his skill in the art of armiger. Under normal circumstances, a wild kirin, or rather a kirin that did not know of humanoids would have been unlikely to learn such a technique. However, Barbas was no normal Kirin, he had been the companion of a god like entity, and was now well acquanted with the Mizukage.

Thus, he had access to teachers who could tutor him in various martial arts. This was of course an instance in which the use of a tutor was rather redundent. After all the mighty beast was merely learning a fundermental technique, one in which you learned to better use a shield through the use of a basic stance. He merely had to practise the technique a few times in his different forms to gain a better understanding of how it all worked.

First, he positioned himself into the desired stance while in his humanoid form, taking note of how it all felt: the ease with which he could move his shield to defend against attacks. Half of the battle with any form of martial art was getting the technique into your muscle memory, for it was all well and good understanding a technique in the classroom in calm conditions. But you had to be able to perform it with flawless technique in the midst of battle.

Yoko continued her diligent study of the chakra-based rituals while Barbas engaged in his training regime. She opened one of the ritual books that she carried around on her person and turned to the correct page, eyeing the techniques as she went until she found the one that she was seeking out. The technique that she was focusing on this time was called “Power”, the name more or less gave away what the technique did.

The idea was to increase the physical power of the user through the application of this technique, namely, the skills of the user that revolved around an application of physical prowess. So the force with which one could jump, or the overall power with which they could dive under water. Both skills that Yoko rarely used. But skills none the less. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of options for this particular slot.

So, as a result, the youth had committed herself to learn the workings of the technique. She copied the ritual out onto a sheet of paper in pencil. And then proceeded to review it, looking for any inaccuracies or differences from what the book had detailed. Correcting the mistakes as she noticed them before finally penning the final draft out in ink. The end result was a copy of the ritual that would need to be re-performed at a later date.

Yoko had recently acquired a copy of a rare book, a book that would assist her with her crafting skills. As such the youth was keen to read through her copy and attempt to internalise the notations written within. What exactly made something an artistic expression? Well, there were several different types of expressing one's feelings, or so the book alleged. The youth continued to read on to gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter continually questioning the teachings of the book as she went.

For a start, she wondered what her own personal style was, apparently everyone expressed this to a degree through their crafting. And with growing confidence often came a growing sense of a person's own individual style. As they felt a sense of freedom building up. Yoko read further into the book taking down notes from the particularly interesting parts for future reference during her crafting sessions, a cheat sheet if you will.

Of course, this list was nowhere near as detailed as the book, and at times it was often just the name of a particular section with a page reference. What the book did do however was make the youth question what she already knew, a process that allowed her to reflect on her own teachings and evaluate her weak points that could be shored up, along with points of strength that could be further built upon. In the end, the process left her feeling renewed and looking forward to putting her new found skill to practical use.

How foolish! For some unknown reason, Yoko thought that she had already read through her copy of the metalwork mastery book. Alas, this seemed not to be the case, or if she had she needed to brush up on her knowledge at least. This whole affair had come as a bit of a shock, but the youth still needed to read through the book all the same. As such, she sat down in a comfortable position and began her diligent study of the contents.

The book would likely contain all manner of time-saving tips and trick, along with information about how to maximise your use of certain rare materials. As she read into the book she quickly found out new techniques that she had never considered before, such as drilling into metal and then reheating it to shape it in a different way with greater ease as opposed to heating and hammering it.

It was tips like that, that saved the crafter a lot of time. Furthermore, she found out about how to use a lattice form with her materials so that she could use less of the material, reducing its weight and cost of creation, without compromising the overall structural integrity. Again this was a useful tip, for rather obvious reasons. A lighter set of armour would be quite the boon to an adventurer especially when they were carrying other equipment or travelling a long distance.

Barbas had taken to the village training grounds today to learn more about the art of using his shield. So far during his training he had discovered quite a weakness in the style, by defending constantly an opponent could get into their own routine of attacking: they were dictating the pace rather than the shielder. This could mean that the advantage shifted to the attacking side, leaving the defender constantly on the backfoot.

This, of course, meant that the defender's pool of guard points would be depleted over and over until they eventually ran out regardless of how powerful they were or how deep their pool was. As such there had to be a means of attack that Barbas could acquire that could be used while guarding, something to disrupt the flow of the battle. The most obvious form of attack seemed to be slamming the shield that the user was carrying into the opponent.

A short sharp bash to the face would knock the opponent off balance especially if they were not expecting it. Thus, the mighty kirin resolved to practice the technique over and over on the training dummy, not only to increase the force of the technique but also the timing with which it could be deployed. He wanted to master the timing so that he could hit an opponent in the face mid-strike a sure fire way to put them off guard.

After training his offensive abilities Barbas was starting to notice a bit of a pattern, he was favouring a particular type of shield, namely the one he was practising with. Upon further enquiry the creature discovered that this was a rather common occurrence amongst Armigers, they often favoured a particular type of shield whether it be a buckler, light, or in this case tower.

The trick, however, was finding out which type of shield was best for its user, a task that was somewhat difficult as they all had their own advantages and disadvantages. The tower shield, for example, Barbas's preferred weapon was big enough to provide full coverage for those behind it with ease. However, if one wanted to use it with great speed they would find that they were unable unless they trained specifically with that weapon to improve their speed.

Thus, the mighty Kirin committed its attention towards training its skill with the tower shield, it knew that it did not want to be able to use two arms or rather it did not mind not having a hand free for an additional weapon. There was also the fact that the creature could with time learn to use the weapon with a single hand. A large shield like this also meant that the level of protection that Barbas could offer to his companions was increased.

It was time for Yoko to return to her studies, she was going to learn about how and when to use specific rituals to augment her items. The plan being to have a range of different items that could be equipped at different times, for different effects. The real task, of course, was deciding when to change the items and how to do it but that was a problem for another time, for the meantime, she was to focus on the dramatic counter. The effect of the ritual was not nearly as interesting as the name suggested.

Not in Yoko's mind at least, instead the ritual allowed the bearer to negate the effect of an attack, creating a cloud of smoke in its place. The idea was quite similar to the use of substitution in Yoko's mind and thus, vied for a place with the skills she already possessed, that being said having the technique for a moments notice or a sticky situation was still pretty good. Thus, she set to work reading through the inscriptions and deciding how exactly she would use it and on which item.

The real trick was making the ritual instantaneously activate, the effects themselves were quite mundane, but getting them to instantly take effect was somewhat tricky. After all, this ritual could be used in a moments notice to evade a powerful attack, so the deployment needed to be fast, very fast. Yoko spent a large portion of her time for this jutsu researching how exactly one could make their technique activate instantaneously. The end result was a ritual that could be used on her rings at a later date.

Poison could make for a deadly weapon, or rather toxins in general, as an alchemist Yoko knew this all too well. However, she was in a rather fortunate position, as a practitioner of alchemy and taijutsu, her body was somewhat more resistant to the effects of these toxins than that of a ninjutsu specialist. The overall effect meant that only high-level poisons would be able to affect her.

However, this did not mean that she was immune to everything, there would undoubtedly be times when her fortitude failed her as had been the case on her mountain assassination mission where a cloud of gas had managed to affect her all be it for a few seconds. Thus, with this in mind, the youth set out to master the ritual known as Iron Gut. The general idea was to delay the effect of a toxin so that a countermeasure could be prepared whether that be through alchemical means such as an antivenom or chakra means by way of medical techniques.

The point remained that this jutsu did not stop the toxin but rather delay its effects all be it for a minute. The idea behind getting this technique was to counteract the most powerful of poisons those that could instantly kill someone who was affected, the immunity that the user could gain could prolong their life for a long enough period to provide a countermeasure. The technique itself was a rather simple one but unfortunately, it could only be applied to rings and neck based items.

The next technique on Yoko's list had been there for quite some time now, the restoration technique. Yoko was not a trained medic, she did not possess healing chakra techniques like the medical ninja from her village, instead, she personally relied on the use of healing potions to sustain herself, potions that she crafted at great expense. Thus, this seal offered a workaround, not for herself but rather for those that were in need, to expand upon this there would be situations in which the youth wanted to offer aid.

But due to her lack of potions or need to maintain them an alternative method would be more effective. She planned to use this ritual on one of the spare rings that she had crafted and then lend it to those who were unwell to aid in their recovery, thus helping to heal those less well off than herself without expending the powerful healing effects of her potions. The general idea being that the potions were tailored to heal massive amounts of damage, whereas your general civilian was nowhere near as resistant as a ninja, and as such did not need as much healing power to fully recover.

Yoko sat diligently studying the technique and searching for ways in which she could inscribe the ritual onto the ring. Hopefully, the end result would be a healing technique that could be used to aid those in need without costing all that much. In fact, if she was to simply use the lower tier of the technique she wouldn't need to spend all that much time crafting the rings at all. So, in theory, she could have mass produced them.

Yoko's pipefox had also taken to the training ground to finish off her training of a particular jutsu, the jutsu in question was something that modified the effects of her genjutsu and ninjutsu or anything with a range for that matter although those were her intended subjects. The idea was to reduce the size and scale of the technique in situations where doing so posed no real detriment to the user, and thus benefit from the decreased time and chakra needed to form the technique.

The pipefox practised the technique on one of the many dummies that dotted the training grounds, playing around with the range of her techniques by trying to shoot past the dummy. She positioned herself so that the upper limits of her range would be in line with the dummies and then continued to fire off her techniques, noting whether or not the ends travelled past the dummy and whether she felt a reduction in the amount of chakra required.

The results seemed promising but only time would tell whether the technique was a success, or whether additional work was required. Either way, the small pipefox had tried her best to get the technique to a useable level.
