Yoko had studied from her fair share of legendary books, she had gathered them from all over the place in an effort to amass their knowledge. And Volume X was no different, like its counterparts this book specialised in a particular substance, wood. Yoko had already mastered the metal version of the book, so she already had a pretty good idea of what its contents would be but still who knew for certain without looking?

From past experience the addition of the books and their specialised application of the materials had saved a great deal of time especially when it came to the jewellery that she had forged, the wood, however, would serve a more specific purpose, namely, clothing. Yes, it was the youth's intent to use the book and the secrets within to augment her woodworking skills, which she would, in turn, apply to her seamstress activity.

The logic might have seemed strange to some, but to a skilled hand, the wood of a tree could be utilised as a form of armour or even apparel. Yes, it was this specifically that Yoko sought to increase her proficiency with. As she turned through the pages she was delighted to discover that her preconceived ideas were, for the most part, true, the book did indeed include all manner of helpful tips and variations that a generic crafter might have overlooked.

Machining was quite unlike any of the other crafting arts that Yoko had undertaken, the only real similarity she guessed was the ornate workings of mechanical jewellery such as watches, but still, even that was quite dissimilar. Rather there was a particular set of skills that one needed to be a good machinist as the youth was soon to find out, perhaps foremost amongst this was an aptitude for technology.

It sounded almost too obvious, but gadgets by their very nature were at the cutting edge of technology. And while one might have gotten by simply hammering away at a slab of metal to make a sword the same haphazard approach here would yield poor results. But perhaps that was unfair, as a master seamstress, alchemist, and jeweller Yoko had come to discover that each craft posed its own unique set of challenges.

Still, at the very least, the youth needed to advance her understanding of the mechanics behind these devices to something beyond a rudimentary understanding if she was to create perfected items. Thus, the first step in Yoko's mind at least was to assess what she already knew, the youth had managed to amass quite a few blueprints for devices that she wanted to create. Thus, it only made sense to look at them to see what exactly she would need to do?

As a matter of fact, Yoko had managed to obtain quite a considerable amount of blueprints, by no means did she have them all, but being a purveyor of her local gadget shop, the youth had managed to make a list of all of the blueprints that she actually desired. Items that in her mind could benefit from augmentation, perhaps that wasn't the right turn of phrase, rather she had selected the items that she believed the opportunity cost had been sufficiently low on.

That was to say that she picked the items worth augmentation for the amount of time she would have to invest. There would certainly be other items that would benefit from having a masterworked quality but the amount of time she had to work on them or search for the pattern likely meant that it was not worth it in her mine for such a small benefit. Who knew though, perhaps in the future the youth would seek to obtain those additional items.

For the time being, however, Yoko decided to concentrate on understanding how exactly her rare items functions such as the obfuscating eye, sure she had the blueprint but there was a bit of a difference between seeing the item and constructing one perfectly by yourself. If this was to work all of the components would have to come together like a well-oiled machine everything running in perfect synchrony.

Yoko wanted to acquire some bardic powers, specific techniques that would amplify her luck. However, before she could be accepted onto a bard college, or even learn the techniques herself she would obviously require a degree of skill with a musical instrument. Thus, the youth had resolved to learn how to play an instrument, which instrument she did not know. But wasn't that the fun of it?

Yoko came to the training centre with a variety of different instruments from the classic lute and flute, to a guitar, and triangle. The question that she faced was how good did she want to be with the item, and did she want to optimise it for combat and or being on the move? For example, if that was the case then there was little point in using a piano. After some careful consideration, Yoko decided that a small instrument was what she needed.

Something that could be held with one hand, discarded with ease, something that would not inhibit her movements. To this end the youth decided to master the noble art of the kazoo, a kazoo was a specific type of onion flute, a small piece that was often overlooked in favour of the more extravagant instruments. Alas, she jested, instead deciding to go with the more traditional singing. Even so, the youth decided that it was to be the musical instrument that she would learn to play, befitting her child-like appearance.

Yoko came to the village training area with a specific technique in mind, the technique centred around the ability to teleport short distances. By applying this technique to one of her cloaks Yoko would be able to teleport a decent distance of fifteen metres at will, enough to evade a substantial hit or advance past a difficult obstacle. But how exactly did one impart the ability of teleportation upon an item?

The task seemed like quite the tall order to even get your head around let alone apply, but even so, Yoko still had to press onwards with her efforts to obtain full use of the technique. It was her intent to apply it to her cloak so that in a pinch she could teleport a short distance. However, it did occur to her that the power was limited to two single uses per day, and while it was still very powerful it did mean that it would have limited usage. Thus, she considered whether it would be worth acquiring further rituals?

Yoko read through her notes on the ritual and began to apply the workings. Surely, there was a way to speed this up? But, for the time being, taking things nice and slow worked well, after all, providing she got the end result she wanted it would not matter in the long run, what was an hour or two in the scale of a lifetime? Instead, Yoko continued to peruse the knowledge that she wanted all the while thinking up potential combinations of items that she could use.

Yoko had come to the training grounds today in the hopes of learning a new technique just like any other ninja, however, the technique that she sought to master was a rather peculiar one. It did not centre around the application of taijutsu, ninjutsu, or even genjutsu but rather around the ritualistic art of deception. Of course, the youth was no stranger to such techniques, she had already learned several, but what made this particular technique so desirable?

Well, the technique in question was called Aura Mask, again like so often was the case the name was indicative of what the ritual sought to accomplish. The user of the ritual could apply it to an item to make it harder to detect, or rather to make the item appear to be mundane. Typically you would apply it to a masterworked item or higher, with a greater benefit being derived from higher levels of mastery.

The basic idea being that if you could make a perfected item appear to be mundane then you had derived a greater advantage than if you had done the same with a masterworked item. Thus, Yoko's reason for acquiring such a ritual should have been immediately clear to anyone who knew her well. She wanted to apply it the various perfected items that she had in her possession to hide the fact that they were augmented with chakra.

Her reasoning for this was two-fold, first when viewed by an onlooker the items would appear to be mundane, thus not drawing additional attention to her or betraying the power that lurked within them. The second was the creeping idea that someone might be able to detect her while she stealthed by the aura exerted by her items, in reality, the chances of such an event occurring where minute, however even the smallest possibility should be reduced in her mind if possible.

However, the possibility did occur to Yoko that this technique shared a lot of similarities with the masking technique that she had already applied to so many of her items: by binding thick dark shadows to the items she was able to obscure their very nature form onlookers meaning that even skilled scryers would have a difficult time detecting their true ability. If this was the case then why was she seeking to unlock a ritual that essentially did the same thing?

Well, it was precisely because of this that she wanted to acquire the technique. The youth sat down beside one of the training dummies and began to read through her notes on the technique if she understood it correctly the end effect was very similar to masking. For while masking offered resistance against, divination, jutsus, other rituals and even items, mask aura offered resistance against everything.

Furthermore the ritual offered a different type of save, masking and the non-detection effect derived from it was dependent upon the mental willpower of the onlooker, for while a weaker opponent might not have been able to perceive the item beneath those with a powerful control over their will had a real possibility of seeing through her creation. Aura mask, however, was not dependent on one's will power.

Rather it depended on the opponent's sense of observation. Now was there a collation between possessing a strong will and observational skills, to Yoko's mind at least it seemed only logical that powerful opponents would have a high degree of skill in both areas. However, the very fact that they were separate instances invariably increased her chances of success. Yoko liked to imagine situations like this through the rolling of dice.

If her opponent was to roll a twenty-sided die and succeed on a ten or higher, then there was a fifty-five per cent chance of success, five per cent per point. However, if they were to repeat the situation and instead roll two sets of dice and require both to succeed then what was their chance of success? To calculate such an idea you had to square the chance of success, this gave a number of approximately thirty per cent, a considerable drop.

And thus, even if the opponent possessed a high degree of skill with both skills the fact that Yoko had applied both to the technique increased her odds of success. She continued to read on while all the while contemplating the idea if she could bind a gem to each of her items then she could increase her success rate and thereby avoid detection that much easier. The only question in her mind was whether her own skill was sufficiently high to oppose an opponent's.

Further reading on the subject revealed that the ritual centred around the users skill with deception rituals, hardly a surprise but still an interesting fact none the less. For this type of skill was rather difficult to improve at least when compared to the likes of observation, thus, in reality, this technique by itself would be all but worthless against a moderately skilled opponent. However, Yoko had other ideas. A specific application of the technique for a specific purpose.

Having mastered the ritual Yoko returned to the training grounds with quite a different purpose in mind, she wished to augment her sense of smell. Quite a strange idea no doubt, but at the moment her current abilities were somewhat lacking, much like a normal person she could certainly smell the scents but unless they were well-known and commonplace she had a difficult time pinning down exactly what they were.

She couldn't for example sniff away at a fine meal and immediately tell what its components were—unless like the aforementioned information they were all commonly available. This was to change, however, as it was her intent at least to be able to recognise the uncommon scents as well. She believed that this would aid her on her mission assignments along with when she needed to go out into the world and find herbs and animals!

Thus, Yoko had brought with her several different phials all including the scents of different uncommon items, from creatures to herbs. All she needed to was smell them with great intensity! The youth found a place sat down in it and began to stiff with great vigour, attempting to commit the scents to memory so that she could use them at a later date, her true intent, however, was simply to enhance her sense of smell remembering the exact scents would merely be a bonus.
